I’m lying on a wooden bench in 70°C heat being stroked with birch leaves. My body is tingling with pleasure. Sauna master Faye is performing a process called whisking – where she holds a bundle of branches and taps and brushes them against my body, occasionally dipping the leaves in water and shaking them over me so I feel like I’m in an earthy-smelling tropical rainfall.every day for a month, and it’s become a hugely important part of my day.
I expected to write this piece about the well-documented physical benefits of sweating, of which there are many. Sauna-ing is known to provide a lot of the same health benefits as exercise, such as lowered blood pressure, all-round cardiovascular health, and a reduced chance of Alzheimer’s., unless you’re also cold plunging,” says Dr Oguguo Igwe, medical officer for the British Sauna Society.
It’s for this reason that many sauna enthusiasts hope the heat boxes will become part of social prescribing programmes – under which patients are directed to activities or groups to improve their wellbeing – and would like research to compare saunas with antidepressants. Studies already show that saunas improve mood and depression symptoms. “We’ve got an overstretched health service and preventative care is important,” Dr Igwe says.
