A Co Tyrone mother who lost her son to a ‘preventable’ death in a mental health unit in Derry five years ago is working to make changes in the local health trust in memory of her child.
Now in its third year, Strabane woman Aisling says she wanted something good to come from her son’s death. “I was assured that that award would be going forward every year, that it wasn’t just a one-off award. “It’s a way for us to think about Davin and tell him to look what he has left behind and how many people that you are able to save.
That includes more involvement from families in safety plans provided for patients, as well as better recording of serious incidents via ‘datex’ forms.“I see those changes but that is ultimately at our expense, we have lost a son before these changes were made. “I don’t forgive them and I never will. I was in a position where I worked with the Trust so I knew this shouldn’t have been happening and that shouldn’t have been happening.
