Tory MP Johnny Mercer says he has withdrawn his support for Theresa May and her government over the historical prosecution of servicemen and women., the Plymouth MP said it was"regrettable" that he could not continue to support the government.
In his letter, he said:"As you know, the historical prosecution of our servicemen and women is a matter that is personally offensive to me.BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said the Conservative Party can"ill afford to lose MPs from [the] rising generation who have been able to win marginal seats" right now.
bbclaurak withdraws his support for anything other than Brexit? Johnny - THERE ISNT ANYTHING other than Brexit. Peter Cook, Dudley Moore futile gesture skit come to mind anybody.
bbclaurak Wrong! - the biggest vote in our lifetimes - government WILL have his support. Read this BTW folks - The BBC continue to be full of shit. close it down. DrainTheSwamp VoteBrexitParty
bbclaurak Now the Cabinet need to if they’ve got the bottle.....
The inclination must be very strong for May to tell this sanctimonious little twerp to do one.
bbclaurak If charging serving soldiers with historic crimes, why not open up the investigations into the activities of the IRA
bbclaurak Nothing worse than an MP scorned.
she absolutely will not give a toss...
bbclaurak Good for him. About time someone stood up against this disgraceful situation. Obviously Mr Blair believed in protecting terrorists than soldiers under officer control acting on instruction from The Government of the day !
more I see this the hollower it rings. With no new legislation until after Brexit collapses into a dungheap he has withdrawn nothing. I am sure his support for the Forces is sincere, but he is doIng nothing practical for them. 'half a resignation' - Newsnight last night. Spot on.
BBCEngland Is he talking about Conservatives or the Country itself....
bbclaurak But he says he is withdrawing his support over historic prosecutions of soldiers. And he is still prepared to support Govt Brexit policy. His statement doesn’t make sense, after the letter he wrote to PM.
bbclaurak Funny timing really - JohnnyMercerUK reported on for being involved in the LCF scam, tries to fix things by going on hignfy and gets his butt kicked so now takes a “moral” stand. Nothing but an entitled user!
Brexit is the cliff edge 😱😱😱⚠⚠⚠
bbclaurak He should be resigning the whip. Never in Plymouth and spends his time pontificating around the country about modern compassionate conservatism (that's a laugh).
Publicity shy Mercer... he’s ex-army y’ know
I bet she's thankful. That's one less Tory MPs corrupt income she has to turn a blind eye to‽
JohnnyMercerUK doesn’t care that innocent UK citizens were unlawfully killed by soldiers of their own government. If you make laws you should also be prepared to uphold them. He should stand down.
Except over Brexit, which is the only thing of any consequence at the moment, In other words he's taken a complete non-action.
He voted for the Withdrawal Treaty even when he was critical of it & had been vocal in his opposition to it. This was not only hypocritical but a betrayal far greater than those who want us to remain. He knows how bad Mays WA is but voted for it.I used to admire him no but longer
bbclaurak Rats fleeing a sinking ship
bbclaurak This is little more than a cupid stunt. And still on the wrong side on the one thing that matters in the short run.
Stop pushing!
If the car is the party and the cliff is its demise and he has withdrawn his support then what he is doing, having got out, is watch it go over the cliff
BUT BUT ... ... not be voting for any of the government's legislative actions outside of Brexit until ... He is still voting WITH the government on LEAVE
Leadership bid, nothing else! He voted to cut veterans benefits.
