After the struggles of the W13, Mercedes say the W14 ran 'faultlessly' on Thursday, though they will continue to act as though they are playing 'catch up' for the foreseeable. F1Testing F1

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin spoke of his encouragement at the team’s overall performance on the first day of testing in Bahrain, saying the W14 ran “faultlessly” all day.

Shovlin acknowledged, however, that the team will still act as if they are playing “catch up” to Red Bull and Ferrari in front, as they had to do for much of last season, as a competitive pecking order is difficult to garner when different tyres, fuel loads and engine modes are in play in testing. But from a Mercedes standpoint, their own runs also went according to plan as the W14 got its first full day of track action in Sakhir, and they hope for more of the same on Friday and Saturday.

Helmut Marko hopes for a strong Mercedes to rekindle German F1 interestIt is not often Helmut Marko hopes for Mercedes success but if that is what it takes to boost German F1 interest then he is all for it. I am German and Mercedes is not a German Team for me all. Nothing in the car and the Team is German except for the name. Germans have to put their hope into audi, who will build the engines in Germany and the car in switzerland, which has a lot of German speakers. tbh, there's almost no support, as Mercedes practically just pays the bill from the team in the UK. A german driver is the only thing that would change that It‘s a fully British team without any German influence besides the brand. The only thing, which is important to Germans at Mercedes is Mick.
