Forklifts are transporting kegs of beer to the racecourse, the grass is being mown, while crews are assembling equipment arriving on the back of lorries every few hours. On the fourth floor of the Princess Royal stand, more than 100 people from community groups across the city have gathered for a community lunch hosted by the Jockey Club, ahead of The Grand National 2024.
The Grand National festival is said to bring £60m a year into the local economy through the racecourse itself and the surrounding bars, hotels and restaurants, as well as the barbers and hair salons. During the Grand National festival the church opens its car park up to racegoers, who can book a space online or turn up on the day. The church also provides tea and coffee, toast and bacon butties to set people up for the day ahead.
Myra, chair of trustees at Hope Community Church, said: "I think Northerners generally are very welcoming people. I think they found that out when they had all that hassle when the Grand National was cancelled when there was a bomb scare. "They actually came in the centre of the parade ring so people could see the other side of races and horses.
