A man accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend during a row told a murder trial jury the death had been a tragic accident.
Mr Mannion, giving evidence for a second day, told a jury at Liverpool Crown Court today that during the evening before Elinor suffered fatal stab injuries her phone was used to order food via Deliveroo. He said it was a 'normal breakfast' of toast and eggs. He said the pair enjoyed 'banter' and that he asked her why she had given Deliveroo the wrong postcode the night before.
Asked if her mood changed, Mr Mannion said: "Yes. It went from me mentioning about Deliveroo to Elinor getting a bit hysterical about other issues. Hence I was just saying 'just go, I don't want to argue, just go'."Pressed on how he had spoken to her, Mr Mannion told the jurors: "I didn't say it nicely, 'just eff off, just go home, I don't need this'.
The defendant told he jury: "I was just being stubborn. I know how it should have been. I was just being stubborn and just saying 'go'."During the row in the apartment at breakfast, Mr Mannion said 'things were starting to get slammed' and cups were being 'thrown into the sink'. Mr Mannion told the jury he could not see what was causing Elinor's distress. Shown a picture of a knife found at the scene, the defendant said it belonged to Elinor who had bought it in Cyprus. He denied having a knife in his hand.
During the call, an automated message from North West Ambulance Service repeatedly states: "North West Ambulance Service is currently experiencing a high number of emergency calls. Please do not hang up. Your call will be answered as soon as possible." The jurors were told he struck her five or six times. Mr Mannion said: "I was hysterical. I couldn't believe what was happening. I didn't know what else to do."
He said he only spotted the knife when he retrieved another mobile phone, which he said was in the communal hall, to place a call to the concierge while he was on the 999 call. He said he picked up both the phone and the knife. He didn't know how his second mobile had ended up in the communal hall, he told the jurors.
