Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has shed some light on the huge bonuses his team-mates received after the momentous Champions League victory of 2005.
Warnock, 42, had expected to play in Istanbul but was left heartbroken when he learnt a misunderstanding with then-manager Rafa Benitez would sideline him for the match. This not only deprived him of taking part in an iconic game but also meant he missed out on the substantial bonuses on offer.
"It was £100,000 to lose it and £200,000 to win it. And I was thinking, 'F***ing hell, that's a massive amount of money.' Because I wasn't on much money at the time. whoever's in the 18, it doesn't go pro rata across the squad. Literally, if you're in the 18, you get it."
