In the 90th minute at Goodison Park, Liverpool boss Matt Beard turned to his bench with his hands on his head.
Everton have won three of the last four meetings between the two teams in the top flight and, despite the form book - and the league table - suggesting Liverpool were firm favourites going in to this weekend's clash, history dictates that things rarely go to plan for the Reds when they face off with their Blue neighbours.
Everton had started the day 14 points worse off than Beard's side and with just one recognised centre-back in the starting lineup. The Reds, meanwhile, came into the clash having won their previous three WSL games and knowing that a victory would keep them in touching distance of a European spot. And Everton's own sloppiness at the back nearly played them in to trouble when Megan Finnigan's loose pass was seized upon by Sophie Roman Haug who, spotting Brosnan out of her goal, took aim from 20 yards out, forcing the Blues goalkeeper to scramble back and claw the ball away from danger. It should have been the glimpse of encouragement Liverpool needed to really turn the screw on their city rivals.
"Yes (it was a missed opportunity", Beard said after the game. "But like I said on Friday, I think form goes out the window in these types of games. It was definitely a missed opportunity in the first half. Perhaps the biggest positive to come from the result is the fact that the point moves Liverpool above Manchester United and into fourth place in the table. Marc Skinner's side finished last season 33 points above the Reds, so for Beard & co. to have bridged that gap this season is a tidy reflection of their considerable progress.
