Lisa Nandy has written to the government asking for 'clarification' following a decision to scrap plans to house asylum seekers in a Wigan hotel, saying the council could not manage 'dozens of people becoming homeless overnight'.
The Wigan MP took to X on Saturday morning to share a letter addressed to minister of state for immigration Robert Jenrick. In the letter, she asks Mr Jenrick to address a 'number of questions,' and says it is 'inconceivable' for Wigan Council to take on responsibility for the migrants currently housed at Kilhey Court.
Ms Nandy also asks when the Britannia - the second hotel in Standish to be chosen to house migrants - will also close for asylum seekers. "Can they assure me that new, suitable accommodation will be found for the people currently being housed at Kilhey Court and that more than five days' notice will be given? After a decade of budget cuts and serious pressure on temporary accommodation, it is inconceivable that the council could take on responsibility for rehousing hundreds of people or manage dozens of people becoming homeless overnight.
