The unrest erupted out of anger over the rising cost of living and new tax plans. Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri gave government 72 hours to agree on reforms. Fires are smouldering and shopfronts have been smashed in in Beirut.
I can understand the need for public demonstrations but cannot understand why demonstrators set fire to buildings, vehicles and smash windows and other damage. Surely peaceful demonstrations are far more effective especially if there are thousands supporting their cause.
