The criteria for winning the Norris Trophy depends on who is in the running for the award. Is it the best offensive defenseman? The best two-way? The most trustworthy, defensive back? hayyyshayyy examines the factors that will affect this year's race:

Every Norris contender has played some percentage of power play time, even if they’re not the number one. Penalty killing is where the results vary. Hamilton’s only killed 14 minutes of penalties, or four percent of the available time in the games he’s played. Karlsson’s down at seven percent of the Sharks’ short-handed minutes. Dunn and Josi join them in sub-20 percent territory. Meanwhile, Spurgeon, Makar, Fox, Burns, Lindholm, and McAvoy average over two minutes per game on the penalty kill.

Sometimes a coach tries to limit a player’s minutes in those situations because their usage is so high elsewhere — that’s true for Heiskanen in Dallas, now under Peter DeBoer. Should a player be faulted for their deployment? Not really, it’s out of their control if a coach sees the best way to maximize their game and plays them accordingly. If they can’t handle those minutes, on the other hand, it may be worth flagging.

How will voting evolve this season? Will the shift of the last few years continue, or will a new trend emerge? That’s what this year’s Norris Trophy finalists and winner should reveal in what’s shaping up to be another close race.
