Behind every successful man, there’s a fed-up woman. When the double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell was in the middle of one of his many heroic escapades – maybe it was rowing the Atlantic, all 2,937 miles of it, with Ben Fogle, or perhaps it was that race to the South Pole – his long-suffering wife Beverley commented drily on the lengths men would go to “to avoid Christmas shopping”.

James Cracknell is a great Boat Race story but should age eclipse youth? | Richard WilliamsThe Boat Race and University Challenge are both being dominated by postgraduates yet used to be about the nation admiring the strength and knowledge of young people Yes!! Considering his recent health problems too, his achievement is astounding!! Ummm. You're missing something big here. Cracknell brought something to the boat that others didn't have. He made the boat faster. He wouldn't have been in it otherwise. What coach under this pressure would put a risk in? Your bias for youth is missplaced. Slightly off topic, and don't want to sound like a pedantic fart, but, surely Cambridge wear a green strip and not light blue?
