The Boat Race and University Challenge are both being dominated by postgraduates yet used to be about the nation admiring the strength and knowledge of young people

No one watching University Challenge lately will have overlooked the presence of Jason Golfinos. He’s the man who knows everything. He knows about Praxiteles and Benny Goodman, about Winston Churchill’s speeches and video games. He’s American and he tends to celebrate a moment of knowledge-based triumph with a fist-bump.

He seems to have paid a high price for his dogged fanaticism, maybe his brain injury added to his already present work ethic. It certainly seems to have had a negative effect on his family.

Yes we know he’s outstanding and all, but on my telly it looked like there were other guys in the boat with him!

Slightly off topic, and don't want to sound like a pedantic fart, but, surely Cambridge wear a green strip and not light blue?

Ummm. You're missing something big here. Cracknell brought something to the boat that others didn't have. He made the boat faster. He wouldn't have been in it otherwise. What coach under this pressure would put a risk in? Your bias for youth is missplaced.

Yes!! Considering his recent health problems too, his achievement is astounding!!
