Forget plans for the military or community outreach – ‘national service’ should be a stint in customer service

I have been brought around to a Tory policy for perhaps the first time in my life.proves that it’s a stint in customer service that should be mandatory, with corrective top-ups for the most intractably uppity among us.

Now, I like to think of myself as a calm, kind person. But like everyone, there are a couple of things that drive me to irrational levels of fury: And while there are undoubtedly some sadists who genuinely enjoy upsetting people, I have to believe that most bad behaviour is thoughtless – as such, obligatory time in a relevant role ought to be enough to remind us of our manners.between the ages of 18 and 22, I will never, ever, be able to muster anything but fellow-feeling for someone in a uniform and a rictus grin.

It’s no coincidence that service roles, with all their invisible emotional labour, are wildly undervalued. Besides being regarded as low-skilled, waiters and shop assistants are paid a pittance, exploited with, and unsociable shift patterns. Rudeness is never acceptable, but in customer service, it’s nothing less than insult to injury.
