When journalist Dianne Bourne saw Amanda Holden tucking into a slice of the famous Bruce cake from Get Baked she knew immediately that she had to try a slice.
They're always saying sorry on social media because they can't make enough cakes for everyone. The man who made Bruce, Rich Myers, said: "We cannot bake unlimited numbers of Bruce, if we could I'd be Mr Kipling and I wouldn't be sat talking to you idiots, I'd be in the Bahamas having my a******* bleached.",
When I arrived, I was glad to see free parking spots across the street from the well-known red-brick building of Get Baked Bakery. I was even happier when I walked straight in, facing only a short queue at the shop counter. But don't worry, I wasn't silly enough to drive all the way to Leeds without making sure I could definitely get a slice of Bruce. They have an online system for reserving collections - which is as easy as pie to use. So before I set off, I booked myself a 12.40 slot.
While waiting for my pie and muffin to be wrapped up, I sat down in the small waiting area inside the shop to get my first look at Bruce beneath the perfect packaging. Whatever you think about cake, there's no denying that once out of his wrappings this is a fine, glossy specimen and a triumph of calorific engineering.
