“How old is old enough to talk about injustice and race? And how do we make sure we're doing it right?”

How do you raise an anti-racist child in a racist world? If you haven’t been asking yourself this question already, then now is most certainly the time to start.

As a white, middle-class, state-educated woman, I have a lot of innate and extrinsic challenges to face. Firstly, just at the moment, my son seems so beautifully, perfectly unaware of race – his own and that of those around him – that a little part of me wants to keep it that way.

Then there is the worry about doing it wrong. About the inevitable criticism when you do. About passing on my own ignorance, discomfort, clunkiness and carelessness and having my son punished for my own mistakes. I am raising my child in a white home, in a largely white city, with all the privileges that being white have brought me. He has more BAME friends at nursery than I do now; or so it seemed from the photos uploaded by the staff each day.

This week, my son attended his first Black Lives Matter protest. Before concern about the pandemic clouds your attention, let me explain: He sat in his buggy, way at the back, metres from anyone, eating a boiled egg. My partner and I wear masks. It was safer than a trip to the park, certainly safer than going to a supermarket. Will he remember that day, the speeches, the slogans, the pursuit of systematic change? Almost certainly not. But does it matter that he was there? I think so.

Familiarity brings understanding...

The question of the day....I have a son. At nursery school he met his first best friend, a little girl from a English/Greek Cypriot background. They played together, slept, sometime bathed together. He spent time at her house, she at ours. 23 years later, you have a non racist.

Furthermore, communities cannot be held accountable in the same way as the state End communism first, then debate. Abolishing the police? Who is the genius behind this? Did we start living in a Utopia and I didn't see it? Where ppl do the right thing bc that's how it's supposed to be and we don't need laws, lawmakers, or law enforcers?
