Opinion: Why abolishing the police in the wake of racist brutality will not protect women

While I am in full sympathy with Angela Davis’s visionary aspirations, I believe that it is not possible to take an abolitionist position unless we have a revolution which ends capitalism. The police prop up an inherently unequal society, protecting the interests of capital and property; their policing strategy is bound to be shaped by those interests.

Only in 2020, when mass hysteria and irrationality reign, would anyone even consider the possibility that abolishing the police is a good idea.

Defunding the police isn't the same as abolishing the police. Not even close. You folks that do journalism work shouldn't have to get diction-checked by people on Twitter.

How on earth would we ever abolish the police. Especially with BlackLivesMatter thugs running riot. It Independent validating their violent political message?

Abolishing the police will not protect ANYONE, apart from criminals

This has been a true concern of mine as my circles have been discussing police abolition. However, I don’t know a single womxn (including myself) that has gone to the police to report sexual violence bc of the lack of trust we have in the justice system

Abolishing the police? Who is the genius behind this? Did we start living in a Utopia and I didn't see it? Where ppl do the right thing bc that's how it's supposed to be and we don't need laws, lawmakers, or law enforcers? Until then, we need the law enforcers.
