Ant’s prescription drug addiction came after he damaged his knee in 2014 and underwent a botched operation on it the following year. He believes the injury to his knee – which was already delicate following years of golf and football – was sustained during a Riverdance routine he performed with Dec on aAnt was initially prescribed co-codamol and codeine, but when doctors discovered the pain was caused by a hole in his knee bone, he was moved on to the opioid tramadol, which is highly addictive.
To cope with the highs and lows of all the prescription drugs, Ant hit the booze. He was also given sleeping pills to help him at night.Ant said: “I was drinking far too much. I took sleeping pills, too – I was prescribed temazepam and diazepam. They’re really addictive. But with painkillers it’s a very deadly mix.”
