Inside Ant and Dec’s 27-year extraordinary friendship and unbreakable bond

THE key to the friendship between Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly lies in its true beginnings on a cold day in a Newcastle car park in 1993. It was the worst day of their teenage lives.

"Our options were taking up a BTEC course we’d both enrolled on, or following through on some crazy idea to have a pop career.. I’d known him a few years by then and he was a mate, but it was like we just suddenly grew up."We had no idea something like that could happen and we made a pact then, that if we stuck together we could be stronger.

When they first met on the set of Byker Grove, Ant was not initially impressed by his on-screen “bezzie” Dec.Ant and Dec's friendship wasn't smooth sailing, but it was when Ant was at his lowest that Dec stepped up and supported his friendThey were both 13, and from working-class family backgrounds but Dec, the youngest of seven from a close Irish catholic family, had little in common with the spikey-haired newcomer – apart from the fact they both wanted to be on television.

His father, Raymond, walked out on his mum, Christine, leaving her doing three jobs to support the family, while 10-year-old Ant was left in charge of cooking for and looking after his little sister Sarah.
