Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are at Volair Huyton on Longview Drive dealing with a fire in the ground floor plant room of the leisure centre. Paul Evans, 17, from Old Swan, was in the leisure centre at 2.10pm when a fire alarm began to ring, but claimed most people there were initially unconcerned.
“Then a voice came over the loudspeaker, saying evacuate immediately, this is not a joke. We were all outside for about 10 minutes. Then two fire engines came.Paul added he couldn’t see any smoke but there was “definitely a smell of burning”, with staff seeming concerned and firefighters bringing their hoses inside the building. He left the area at 2.30pm.
"The power to the plant room has been isolated and the fire extinguished. Ventilation is in progress." The ECHO has approached Volair for comment.Get all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you by signing up to our daily and breaking newsletter.
