Government shuts down mandatory cycling helmets question from Conservative MP — the Department for Transport insisted the government has 'no intention' to make wearing a helmet while cycling a legal requirement cycling

The Department for Transport has insisted the government has"no intention" to make wearing a helmet while cycling a legal requirement.

Norman, himself the Tory MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, also added that while the Department for Transport"recommends that cyclists wear helmets" the"safety benefits of mandating cycle helmets are likely to be outweighed by the fact that this would put some people off cycling". The safety benefits of mandating cycle helmets for cyclists are likely to be outweighed by the fact that this would put some people off cycling, thereby reducing the wider health and environmental benefits.

A few years ago whilst out and about minding my own business a car rear ended me sent me over 6 foot into the air landed on the pavement my helmet was split into 2 can you even imagine what I would be like without one

It's a personal choice We never wore helmets as kids and grew up riding with out them

I think just like crash helmets for motorbikes or seat belts in cars should be a personal choice 😳Or do you think that would be a crazy idea🥸Have you data of how these have saved lives. I remember exactly the same debate over motorcycle helmets. Look at the end result 🤕

No evidence that helmets make any difference on average so why force people to wear one?

Helmets become mandatory in Cypurs from Feb-23 for every cyclist older than 14yo no matter where/when they cycle! An MP proposed it, 2 Ministers (Transport & Justice) supported it and a couple of months later they showed fake statistics & lied in the parliament to get it passed

Wearing a helmet should abs-fkn-loutely be the law. 1 reason they don’t have the gonads to do it is because it would kill the Boris Bike Scheme in London and elsewhere.

If you choose not to wear a helmet and end up as a vegetable its unfortunate that it won't be your problem.

Is this the moment when this administration start basing decisions upon evidence? One can but hope.

Good

Thank goodness-sense prevails.

So are people OK to pay for NHS treatment if they get a preventable head injury whilst cycling without a helmet, or do they want the tax-payer to cover this for them?

Good.

Common sense prevails

Goodness, government applying common sense? something about broken clocks . . . . !

Good
