Exclusive: Yamaha ‘already looking’ for new satellite MotoGP team

Whatever the truth regarding the recent VR46 rumours, Yamaha Racing managing director Lin Jarvis has confirmed the factory is already looking for a new satellite MotoGP team.

Jarvis said of the growing gap between the number of Yamaha and Ducati machines on the grid, “Next year it will definitely not be an advantage to only have two bikes! Therefore, the more obvious Yamaha candidates would be VR46 and Gresini, which presently swell the Ducati ranks to four teams and eight riders but only have access to year-old machines.

That coincided with the completion of the Sepang Racing Team’s initial three-year M1 deal and Yamaha admittedNegotiations were complicated by the fact that Rossi was a Petronas SRT rider at the time and, ultimately, it was decided that Yamaha would stick with the multi-race-winning Sepang project. Both parties initially indicated a contract extension was expected but wasn't helped by the lack of results for Andrea Dovizioso and rookie Darryn Binder., RNF began looking elsewhere and decided on a switch to Aprilia for 2023 and beyond, leaving Yamaha with only its factory team of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli next season.

Why does Yamaha want the Satellite team? They haven't done anything for their satellite teams in recent years. No effort to keep Tech 3 with him after many years. And 0% for SRT and RNF squads. They gave updated FQ20 bike on SRT because they were 'forced' to do it.

If I had the choice between Ducati and Yamaha, I would pick the Ducati. Nobody wants the Yamaha with the current performance.

Ducati have hinted eight bikes on the grid is too many. Yamaha want a satellite team. So a VR46 partnership with Yamaha would be most likely.
