The government has said it will engage in formal talks with teaching unions if they call off strike action planned for next week. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has specifically written to the National Education Union , pledging to move into "formal talks on pay, conditions and reform".
However, the government said the union must cancel the industrial action scheduled for next week. “Our hope is that we can find a fair and reasonable settlement that recognises the vital role teachers play, while acknowledging the wider economic pressures facing the country and the government’s priority to halve inflation," said a Department for Education spokesperson.
“A condition of these talks will be that the National Education Union calls off next week’s strike action.” It is not clear whether Tuesday’s announcement means the government is willing to discuss this year’s pay deal.Members of the NEU are due to walk out in Nottinghamshire on March 1 in a dispute over pay. The union said it is planning a march from Forest Recreation Ground to Old Market Square at 12pm for speeches and a rally.
"After over a decade of pay cuts and decimated school budgets, they feel they have a duty to stand up for teachers, pupils and education and demand that our schools are properly funded." The pledge on talks by government comes just hours after it agreed to meet the Royal College for Nursing, resulting in the union pausing next week's 48-hour strike.
