Gary Lineker tweet a technical breach, ex-BBC head says

BBC News

TV and radio coverage have been hit throughout Sunday as the stand off between the host and the BBC continues. It follows an unprecedented day of turmoil for the BBC's sports operation on Saturday, with staff including some of the most recognisable faces and voices associated with the broadcaster walking out.

On Saturday, Match of the Day was cut to a 20-minute highlight reel with no punditry, commentary or opening theme, though viewing figures were up by almost half a million at 2.58m.The BBC has not commented further on behind-the-scenes efforts to resolve the situation. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt - who earlier said he "profoundly" disagreed with Lineker's tweet - told the programme that he thought "making sure the BBC maintains its reputation for independence and impartiality is the outcome that matters most".Mr Davie told BBC News on Saturday he was in "listening mode" about how to reform impartiality rules for staff outside of the news operation after a "difficult day".

Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer have both attacked the presenter this week for his comparison between the government's language and Nazi Germany.Labour's Shadow Chancellor Rachael Reeves said the BBC had "clearly come under immense pressure from the Conservative Party to take Gary Lineker off air".

The BBC should be a springboard for new talent. When they get famous & want big bucks, ply their wares in the market. The BBC is now a Care Home for has-beens, too lazy to offer their 'talents' elsewhere. Why should they, when they still get mega bucks for the same old rubbish?

DefundTheBBC Cancel your licence now

Try again lads

Not morally and that's the thing the erks the government. They are morally corrupt and trying to win votes through immigration again. Its all they've got!

No1 like the bloke only a pocket of people in there own loop The public still think he sold his country out with this fake kick Look how bad and Pathetic The kick was it was betting scam

If it’s a breach to have freedom of speech then the BBC is more corrupt than we thought. As a public funded broadcaster can you now do prime time public information broadcast as to how people can no longer pay the licence fee legally. We need clear info how not to pay you .

That's a tory expression technical breach. Manager should be sacked or cancel the licence fee.

Is arranging a loan to a PM before getting your job a technical breach too?

Legend has it there was a time when Sport was separate from Politics for everyone to enjoy, where Left and Right stood together to unite and cheer against the opponent and congratulate the loser on a valiant effort regardless of their ethics. They must have been proud times...

So Mr Lineker will get an apology, be reinstated and the ‘impartiality’ rules changed so he can put out anything he likes on social media. Just proves that the BBC is not impartial and really not fit for purpose anymore DefundTheBBC

Sick of hearing about Lineker. He’s an overpaid twit. As are the other ex footballers. He should have some sense of responsibility over his actions and decide if he wants to be a political commentator or a sports presenter.

I won’t watch him again on match of the day

No one cares whether it’s a breach or not, it’s the hypocrisy that is sticking in the throat

BBC is 'technically' independent says member of ruling party Richard Sharpe.

Here’s some Freedom of Breach!! Sharp! Go today and restore a little integrity to the BBC Fiona Bruce keep her ‘nose’ out too

Correction. It was abhorrent gaslighting of the victims of national socialism.

Oof you're embarrassing yourselves. If the Conservatives are now controlling the BBC, could their donors just give you the Tory propaganda cash, so that us plebs aren't forced and harassed to pay £170 per year ransom for tvlicensing ... It's so we don't feel like…

It was OK when he tweeted this though?

And the viewing figures went up

Rubbish!

Not so much the technical nature, more the ignorant offensive content

You missed the 'however, it's a grey area' bit of the quote, where he goes in to explain further. But then impartial headlines, correctly reflecting the views of the individuals, have never been Laura's strong point. Have they?

Oh dear

Slow news day?

Hypocrites

No it’s not. Your own rules and guidelines gave an example very close to this reality - as a situation that did not break the BBC rules. No one in their right mind would think GL’s tweets are anything to do with the BBC.

Not according to this…

Technically, Tories are in power because no one could be bothered to vote. Technically, does that mean they are the voice of the BBC?

Except it wasnt though was it. Lineker has said himself that he's a freelancer, not employed exclusively by the BBC. He expressed a personal opinion, on his personal social media, about a subject which has literally no overlap whatsoever with the role he performs at the BBC.

No breach. BBC's Tory governors couldn't brook criticism of this foul Govt. Andrew Neil, Alan Sugar, other right-wing pundits comment their hearts out with BBC's blessing. Cross the red-line and call out Govt for monstrous human rights abuse and you have the Lineker incident.

If bbc is meant to be impartial how was it okay to make that “political” statement during the World Cup? Hypocricy

I haven't heard a soul say they miss these old crony pundits. They are unimportant, unnecessary and a disgrace likening conservatives to Nazis. The BBC should clear house and reinvent their sports program with an young, unbiased, engaging group. SackGaryLineker motd bbc

It’s funny how many people prefer watching the highlights without the commentary isn’t it

He said and I quote “looks like a technical breach”. He didn’t say it was a breach just looks like.

Seriously? This is the best the BBC can come up with? IStandWithGaryLineker

No it isn’t and if it is bbc Laura k, Fiona Bruce and lord sugar has done same thing and should have employment suspended

'technical'? Meaning you'll do nothing.

I can’t read this rubbish

Bull

Nazi BBC...

Sack him then.

We don't want black Gary & his pals back MOTD is much better without them but 100% you will cave in & bring down the BBC eventually ..win win for my pocket

You have history.....

Is this news

Why was a sports presenter the only one honest enough to call out the government for embracing a fascist policy?

STOP DIGGING!!

And just like that... the left decided to be 'champions of free speech' again 🤷🏻‍♂️

BBC you are on the wrong side of history here and the sooner you accept that the better it will be for your survival because Sharp and Davie will strip you and sell you to the highest bidder - that’s what Tories do. The left wants to restore your impartiality to save you.

Bollocks. Why are robbie gibb and richard sharp employed ? Who chose the board ? Tories will sell BBC

👇👇👇

Nope.

Sack him ,there's plenty of other presenters who could take over

And these...?

But they were accurate and true. How can they be a breach?

'technical breach?!', FFS here we go, start of the climbdown. He's either breached them or he hasn't.

I know it's been said a 1000 times before but I haven't seen an answer. Why isn't the likes of Alan Sugars tweets and outbursts afforded the same forensic analysis?

Was arranging an £800000 loan a technical breech?

Bye bye wokey. Snowflakes need to learn that rules, contracts and the law apply to them. They’re not supreme beings who are exempt. They’re not the superheroes and everyone else the villains. He learnt the hard way. Should keep his trap shut.

BBC has opened a Pandora’s box BBC are ok when he tweets about corbyn or anyone else sugar etc do pro government anti opposition tweets but criticism of the government is a no no hypocrisy shines bright at the BBC

Bbc really going far back to justify their mistake

Oh and here comes the back tracking… Weak and self serving…

Boring now. Who cares what he he thinks. He ain’t god

Maybe the solution to this chaos at the BBC, could be that Gary Lineker promises to stop sending controversial political Tweets, if Richard Sharp steps down as chairman of the BBC, which would go someway to restoring integrity at the top of the BBC.

Suspended for technical breach of impartiality?

What? Like this?

Still a breach

Richard Sharp (BBC Chairman) donated £400,000 to the Tories and helped fix up a £800,000 loan for Johnson. Tim Davie (BBC Director General) is a Conservative politician. Robbie Gibb (BBC Board Member) was Theresa May's Head of Communications. They should all resign.

Pure distraction

Like when he went to Qatar?

Bollocks

Who runs the BBC because in my book unless he conforms he [has] to go.

Another ex-bbc head Greg Dyke said it's not (interview played on bbc5live ). So why wasn't he quoted or interviewed on the same program? How come BBC said he's not bound by those rules previously?

That's quite a charge.

Just technical. No biggie. desperately trying to get back to reporting metro left group think and putting slants on news programming that the majority of the country and their funders don’t agree with.

Keep digging lovelies.

Let's put 5 asylum seekers in linekers home , and I bet Lineker will change his mind and say get them illegal asylum seekers out of my home and Lineker says send them to hotels in working class areas .....that's Lineker 'two faced '.......

VAR....waiting 'technical breach' decission.

Stubborn arrogant t wat thinks he's bigger than the BBC, time for a change, if they boot Ken Bruce off radio two, then why not him, the difference was Ken was good at his job🤷🏻‍♂️

Such bullshit

If I don’t turn up for work I don’t get paid and let customers down! What action are the bbc going to take?

RashellTamina I'm finding it really hard to believe any of my fellow Brits are defending the sort of language used by Braverman about refugees. Trying to broadbrush them into those who illegally try to enter our country with such dreadful stuff is awful.

The Tory loan shark should resign

Majority never liked him ! Sanctimonious !

And what about having Nigel Farage on BBCQT so many times? Look at the damage Brexit has caused. And what about Alan Sugar’s tweets in support of the Conservatives? Come on - this is ridiculous bias.

This is a joke & I’m not laughing. bbc your control & influence by gov powers is so clearly obvious. You make yourselves fallible - another death nell in the demise of news corporations who are controlling the narrative & smothering free speech. Was Trump right after all? 😮😳

Do the right thing sack him

RashellTamina Not actually ALL he said. You’ve done a good job of misconstruing the meaning he conveyed. 👏🏻

This is a PR disaster for the BBC We can see you!!

How come the BBC says he has to be impartial when they are not themselves? They toe the Government line. In other words, biased. They must all think the taxpayers are stupid. Sharp & Davies should be sacked, the best part is, I don't even agree with Linekar. But he's not wrong

No it is not nice try

Woke & lefty BBC has excepted Gary Lineker's return next week....! Shame ! on BBC ! DEFUND BBC !!

Newsroom, you need to walk. The BBC's credibility as a news source is going up in smoke and there will never be a better time to wrestle it away from Tory interference.

DefundTheBBC

Embarrassing this is still the top story on your website. How about do some investigating into the likely illegal immigration policy? Or any other number of important actual news stories.

So your backing down? Well that's my TV license gone then. Giving him a license to do what he likes! You're weak.

Your bias is embarrassing at best

Boats bbc Lineker SuellaBraverman Rishi_Sunak everything BUT the key question, why are Refugees leaving their homes and risking their lives STOP selling weapons in their home countries to profit from wars and it could look very different!

Sack the board!!! You can't demand a presenter be impartial & have a board of four Tory donors, candidates, advisors, aides & loan guarantors to Tory prime ministers... It's not rocket science but it does seem some people need pictures.

BBC underestimated one man's worth.

'Technical' - here we go... The BBC has always been & is simply the voice of the Establishment. The Establishment is now very left-liberal - and consequently, so is the BBC. What is infuriating the Left over Lineker is that it acted 'out of line' by suspending one of their own.

Just red card him

So tell me when you are in the stands at a football match who does the commentary then?, so having no commentary is like being there

Impartiality ?

What does he say about Alan Sugar or Andrew Neil ?

It’s not a breach, it’s his personal opinion. If you don’t like or agree with him then just ignore and move on

Sack em all. The tail can’t be allowed to wag the dog.

LOL no it wasn't.

The ex BBC executive doesn't seem to understand what freedom of speech actually means

Yes it is

You’re in very murky water here BBC. The way you handle this is critical to your future I reckon. You’re not doing very well so far

Sacked Tim Davie & Richard Sharp yet?

Keep spinnin BBC !

And yet it wasn't a problem before we had Tory stooges in charge of the BBC, funny that isn't it?

So we’re these also?

Bollix. We see you.

Technical breach or not just keephim and his cronies of the air and use the huge sums saved on better programming, last nights MOTD viewing figures up by 500,000 days it all

GaryLineker This is all we need to know about the bbc, isn't it bbclaurak jeremycorbyn:

Is donating £400k to the tories an act of impartiality? BBC

Surely the more important questions is, what measures will the BBC take in order not to be partial and cave in to government pressure and interference.

pcowles

Bullshit. The country says. Get the Tory Party out of the BBC. SackRichardSharp SackTimDavie GaryLinekerIsRight ToriesOut248

Says the state owned media that is the BBC. Ok I know your not really state owned like all Russian media but you sure as heck do act like it. A very bad look. Once you loose trust it’s a slippery path. You look disgraceful

where Impartiality goes to die - the

I notice the woke female events weren’t cancelled today. Stuff choice for lefties 😂

Did Lord Sugar not break these same rules in having a go at Jeremy Corbyn and Mick Lynch, Michael Portillo and his train programmes whilst still an MP, and if you want proper unimpartiality there's the BBC Chairman who is an active donor to the Tories, all stinks of hypocrisy.

'..pundits who work for the BBC are not subject to the requirements of impartiality on social media' 'The extent to which a non-staff member.. is required to comply with the Editorial Guidelines will be set out in the BBC’s contract with them'

First the equivocation, then the self-justification to be followed by capitulation. This is 2023; not 1923. The Empire has gone. IStandWithGaryLineker

The BBC didn't take action when football pundits like Linekar made political comments in a BBC STUDIO during the Qatar World Cup. But the BBC has suspended Linekar for comments he made on his OWN social media. The BBC decides its OK to protest against Qatar but not Tory policies.

Still on about this?

A “technical breach”… so your collusion in helping a lying, conniving, cheating PM to get a loan, was that also a technical breach?

Technically maybe - but worth all the hoo haa over reaction from the right wing press and tories? Defo not - leave him be he's a good un

Out of interest what was the failure to investigate Jim'll Fix It?

Scrap the license (tax) then do what you want.

Bollocks.

Biased Framing. Your reputation for fairness and balance is being trashed by a right wing management. *It's a grey area*

Ohhh only after a nerd on bbclaurak said so! Entitled as a freelancer to express FreeSpeech ... don't have to agree with it, but we DO live in a democracy

If Lineker's tweet is a technical breach, then Sugar, Packham, Portillo, and Neil during his time at the BBC, we're also in breach. But it's only Lineker being held to account. I wonder why? And if Lineker goes, Tory duo Sharp and Davie should follow him out of the door.

Think it's about now we need to stop funding the Tory cabal that is the BBC.

Would love to see you lot have to compete without the license fee with your biased rubbish output

About time they offloaded the talentless gravy train hangers.

Sure a 'technical beach' makes the last 3 days all worthwhile

Bollocks

Sorry beeb, don’t trust you any more.

If it is a breech then are you also going to sack Alan Sugar, Michael Portillo, Richard Sharp, Robbie Gibb etc etc?

... a technical breach of the 'anti-Lineker clause' recently written and unimpartially implemented by an impartially constituted and explicitly Tory BBC management.

So sack him or back down. I smell a pathetic attempt of a compromise from the BBC senior management but I think they have picked on the wrong bloke.

Says the man who flogged television centre for a pittance then left the country.

Bollocks

Close down the whole of the BBC, don't bow down to any of them, there's plenty out there that can do and would want there jobs.

The joke is that no one questioned this technical breach from BBC radio 4 on the inside health show last week. Wether or not the NHS is a shitshow at the moment, swearing shouldn’t be allowed on daytime tv or radio

Kuenssberg writing about impartiality. Irony defined.

I want to see the VR 🙄

Funny how British government and the BBC hypocrites accuse Chinese companies of having ties with the CCPP, when that is exactly what the BBC is doing.

How do you describe Fiona Bruce suggesting Stanley Johnson only beat up his wife once so it is no big deal? Of course she was being pro-Tory so that is acceptable at BBC

Not like the mRNA jabs then , that’s not technical enough of a huge error of reporting? Hmmm

Tory ex bbe head says ..

Sack then ALL

Funny how Andrew Neil or Jeremy Clarkson writing political columns for actual newspapers were not. The fact is that you’re going after him because he dared to criticise the government. I know a thing or two about press blending over, coming myself from a dictatorship. For shame!

That's quite a charge

Get rid of Sharp, Gibb and Davie and we might take you seriously again.

Like this you mean?

'Bullshit', everyone else says. ''Selective applying of 'rules' whenever it suits them but ignoring those same 'rules' at other times dependent on which political party was being talked about and who complained.' We saw what you did. You can't make us unsee it.

Fire all who withdrew their service and broke their contracts

Technical breach..just waiting fir a decision from Stockley Park

Any mention of Fiona Bruce's disgraceful wife beater comments?

Linekargate ..Day 4 of the crisis !! The Pundits who are 'striking' in support..are they like Aud Wingates 'Chindits' of Burma fame ?

Why don't Sharp and Davie just resign? surely they should know they are damaging the reputation of the BBC. Bring back Gary.

Not according to this, there's no breach at all 😉 Keep digging... 🙄

Will you the same excuse next time he does this? Incidentally now would be a good time to decriminalise the licence fee and make it an opt in service, then at least we would have a choice over whether we want to find presenters like Lineker.

No it isn't, the rest of the country.

You know things are bad for the giv when Laura Kuensberg comes to the rescue twice in a day.

Gary Lineker has flouted the rules of the BBC and he should have his contract terminated immediately . All other staff who have refused to work in sympathy with him should have their contracts revoked also . Failure to do this proves that the BBC has no backbone whatsoever .

Is he a Tory as well?

Explain please? The unexplained reaction by BBC only confirms Gary was right?

Get the little Leftie gone! It’s been going on for far too long

Cause it is every company has a social media policy

BBC lacks any integrity. SackGaryLineker DefundTheBBC

Technical breach 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 fuvk off

Just for clarity … was Gary’s Tweet referring to Germany’s on the 1930’s. Was it before 1933 or after 1933? Would Gary please clarify.

False

They are really not as important as they think they are.

Any comments? sackalansugar alansugar

Well who cares bbc. You didn't diss him when he dissed Mr Corbyn did you..... So tough titties.

Is this not also a ‘technical breach'? Of this. The utter hypocrisy from the BBC is beyond parody.

Why is an ex BBC head still doing work for the BBC ?

What Gary has inadvertently called out, is the control of the BBC by the Tories, simple as, both morally corrupt, hopefully then end of both

Assalam Alaikum, my question is to the Pakistan Army and how much will you return to Pakistan? How much meat will you eat with these thieving politicians? God willing

It’s tweet is nothing more than thought and thoughts change all the time , that’s why ppl delete them. Y’all holding ppl accountable for thoughts and not actions. In the court of law you have to commit a act of crime not a thought of crime to be prostituted.

Assalam Alaikum, my question is to the Pakistan Army and how much will you return to Pakistan? How much meat will you eat with these thieving politicians? God willing

SOMETIMES THE BBC JUST LOOK THE OTHER WAY

Bbc interviewing everyone that supports him! Strange that no bbc bias 🤣🤣🤣

Correction ‘a nasty technical breech’!

Pakistan dollars army choor saysat Danooo pr lanaaat Bay shomar

Is this now government policy at the ministryoftruth ?

Surely it's not that difficult?

So he’s not independent in football, in which he is employed, as we all know who he supports, but tweeting about something that has nothing to do with his role, is a breach. Give your heads a wobble

If other presenters are refusing to work sack them! Unbelievable , employ new staff save millions or refund my fee

Sick of looking at this feckers face on my newsfeed! Is he going to build a haven for all the refugees he’s bringing home? What about a few million to the lifeboat crews who voluntarily risk their lives daily ?

Doesn’t matter clear the lot out

The venerable BBC is fighting against freedom of speech. Tim Davie, resigns! You are a pathetic bootlicker for the Torries. The BBC isn't longer be part of the free press. Shame?

Oh well never mind, move on. Just think of the money they are saving.

Article written by Laura Kuenssberg about impartiality at the BBC Good to see the art of irony is alive and well

There are no doubt many, many technical breaches when the BBC doesn’t even blink. But in Gary’s case the technical breach called out the dangerous language used towards immigrants by the Tories and they didn’t like that. That’s the absolute truth.

They would say that, wouldn't they? Did they admonish others they employed when they made political comments? People such as Alan Sugar, Andrew Neil and Jeremy Clarkson? Mind you, their comments were anti-Labour or expressed other right-wing views.

Is the beeb now in breach of contract with the Premier league I wonder.. maybe an agreed service level ?

Andrew Neil = no action. Clear out the donors

Was the tweet to Penny Mordaunt a technical breach ? Absolutely not, that was the one that broke impartiality guidelines.

No breach of ethical morality

Utter drivel. By the BBCs own words in a situation that stands as a precedent, “his personal Twitter account has no connection to the BBC”. Lineker actually deserves an apology for the mishandling of this issue.

When finding a solution to the Lineker saga, look to Andrew Neill. Whilst being a right wing figure, editor of the Spectator and an active Tweeter, he was still employed by the BBC. On screen, he was scrupulously fair, and that is the key. Focus the rules on the BBC work only.

And another ex DG said it wasn’t - shouldn’t you publish both to be impartial surely!

What is the difference between the BBC and the Völkischer Beobachter? Not much it seems. The BBC is now the propaganda arm of a fascist regeime.

‘Hang on....hang on; technically it was a one off’

So spoken to by the ref, no red or yellow card. Is that how it works

Rubbish, can’t be a technical breach when you have Neil, Sugar, Clarkson, Kuessenberg and Bruce showing much more partiality openly in tweets, programmes and publishing. Pull your thumbs out of the Tories pies and sack Sharp and Davies, the government schills.

Bollocks.

What would have happened if he'd been tweeting anti-Labour comments? Or 'deport all illegals'? Let me tell you: he'd have been kicked out immediately.

Just sack him, the controversy clearly demonstrates he has failed to be impartial. And why are you paying him so much when the viewing figures for MoTD are so low?

Who said?👇🏼

(Worst)

Any confirmation on this being a breach of his employment, then needs to be answer why other stuff he & others have said isn't a breach AND why all the stuff with the chairman is not a breach - which some might think is more important.

Can’t believe how much this is being milked

Bollocks

🖕

Boring, breach my arse, stick with Gary, do not cave in.

Tory party donation & loan facilitating is impartiality breach

This is about multi-millionaire elites squabbling as to who controls the masses. Those smirking in the highest echelons know full well that whichever position prevails – it will still be them and us, rich and poor, privileged and under privileged and nothing will have changed.

Once again an oligarchy of mafia cartel sports pundits & their cohorts are holding the BBC licence paying public to ransom,by forcing them to be subjected to Mr Lineker’s take the knee virtue signalling wokery

Ex-head! 🙄 BBC stop wringing your own neck. Tory are going to sell you off to Murdoch if you carry on!

You CANNOT give into this so called 'Solidarity' if GaryLineker gets away with this it will set a precedent for the future BBC employees. Why is this not on the BBC news

Imagine a football presenter is more important news than the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Iran & SaudiArabia. I'm sure the Chinese brokering the deal has nothing to do with it. Who am I kidding.

It’s not what he said, he said it could be classed as a technical breach, you can’t even report correctly on your own programme…..

Remind us again, how much did your boss donate and how much did he loan to the Tories?

That’s in his ‘opinion’. Gary Lineker’s social media is NOT a BBC platform. It expresses one man’s opinion which he is completely entitled to hold along with millions of other people who feel the same. Is government going to silence us all?

So how does Laura K keep her job?

Where was the concern for the vulnerable in Qatar being worked to death for the World Cup for a pittance in pay? Eh, GaryLineker IanWright0 alanshearer

Loans to Boris ok though 😂

I’ve had to sign paperwork for jobs stating that you represent the company at all times, if any racism or football bigotry online for example they can terminate contract. I agree with Gary, but if they’ve something he’s signed he’s done for.

I enjoyed it without the 3 of them, no but if only he passed it to him or him, no grown men drawing wee circles and lines to show what we already seen, it was brilliant.

How many technical breaches did it take before the system crashed? What he says is that a breach was not something in the rules, but can be used to teach the work force to keep shtum on political asylum.

You're looking foolish Back down bbc

Sounds like a cover up - distraction from the real problem caused by this Tory dictatorship

BBC trying so hard to cover up - fig leaf defence. Take the L and get Gary back on if you still can.

Really ? Is he or isn’t he a bbc employee ?

'Technical breach' aye whatever.

BBC imploding over a “FOOTBALL PUNDIT” expressing an opinion. Has he said something right, has he said something wrong..? And the government are scared because he isn’t scared of them… 1930’s NAZI Germany indeed… We see you…!

It wasn’t!

If they refuse to do their work as independent journalists etc just cancel their contracts

BBC News is Tory propaganda.

The irony being this article is from Kuennsberg the most biased BBC reporter in recent history

Who care as long as the bbc collapse and we don’t have to pay the licence fee any more without being fined

Sack those refusing to work

To breach or not to breach, that is the bull 💩 we're being fed now.

Time for someone else to host the show

Given the existence of social media, where everyone now has the ability to air their personal prejudices and political views, is it now inevitable that we shall need to bring an end to the forced funding of the BBC? It's clearly unable to enforce its rules of impartiality.

And while everyone is concentrating on this side show, the real issue, the illegal migration act, slips unnoticed through and this abhorrent government breathes a sigh of relief

Is it bollocks

🥱
