Malmö is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest this year

The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for Sweden ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest . The city of Malmö is hosting the event from May 4 to May 11 after winning last year’s competition.

Brits heading to Sweden for the contest, the final of which will be held on Saturday, May 11, have been warned by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office that travel in the city could be affected by large crowds and “protests”. It said: “The Eurovision song contest will take place in Malmö from 4 May to 11 May.

"There will be a greater number of people in Malmö during this time. Travel around the city may be affected by travel control systems, or protests.” The FCDO advises UK travellers to check with the official Eurovision song contest website for information about tickets and travelling around the city, and for information from the Swedish authorities.Regarding travel in the city, the FCDO said: During the time of the contest there will be a greater number of people in Malmo.

The FCDO warned that there are “likely to be an increased number of protests in Malmö during Eurovision week.” It said: “Where more than one protest happens at the same time, on opposing issues, clashes can occur. Protests can block access routes. Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and follow the advice of the local authorities.” It advised Brits to check the Swedish Police website for more information.

Regarding crime, the FCDO warned travellers to take care of their belongings, especially in cities as tourists can be targeted by pickpockets. It added: “Violent crime does occur. Gang-related crime, including knife crime, shootings and explosions, have been reported in Malmö, Stockholm and Gothenburg.”
