Outdoor dining setups on Boston's Hanover Street made the response to a fire during dinnertime Wednesday more difficult.

Tony Navarro, who has worked at the firehouse on Hanover Street for nearly two decades, said they are used to navigating around all of the obstacles."I think the worst challenge is the double parking. Some of the side streets also get a little hairy because you've only got an inch on one side and an inch on the other," Navarro said.

Navarro said the firefighters based in the North End know all of the unique challenges, but when mutual aid arrives from other communities, they can be caught off guard. "You don't want to clip an umbrella, or if there's people sitting at the table, you don't want to take the umbrella with them," Navarro said.

The city of Boston said it did make updates to the outdoor dining program this year to improve emergency access. The updates include requiring a four-foot gap between each of the outdoor dining spaces. Some question if that is enough. "This is a street. I don't know what they don't understand. It's not a piazza," Spagnuolo said."Sooner or later, something drastic is going to happen, and yesterday told a story."

Agency workers to be allowed to fill in for striking staff as government tries to end '1970s-era restrictions'It comes amid three days of major rail strikes which have severely disrupted the travel plans of millions - with passengers set to face more cancellations on Thursday and Saturday. You need a PTS card to work on railway line which isn't available to to the public it must be provided by sponsor or from workplace (network rail) how many folk are sitting on agency books with the proper up to date tickets to carry out critical safety checks on the lines? Something needs to happen as the UK can't be held to ransom but I do seem to remember the government and others saying how health and safety will suffer when P&O replaced their staff with agency Unions are just a mafia.
