Russian forces have all but taken control of the strategic port city of Mariupol after several weeks of brutal bombing which has killed thousands of civilians and reduced buildings to dust.

Russian forces are now in control of most of Mariupol but some fighters and civilians are holding out in a steel plant ordered Ukrainian fighters to lay down their weapons.

Ukrainian officials said a steel plant was hit by airstrikes yesterday, despite civilians sheltering there Russian forces have spent weeks bombarding the city into submission but still are not in full control The president said a ‘significant part of the entire Russian army is now concentrated on this offensive’.

Boris Johnson spoke to the US president today, with both leaders committed to sending more weapons to Ukraine.
