Fabio Capello tips Lewis Ferguson to follow path of Serie A greats

The injured Scotland star was this week presented with the prestigious Bulgarelli Award for the best midfielder in Serie A by the former England boss. He is expected to be out until November and will miss Euro 2024 with his country after undergoing knee surgery following a cruciate injury.

The 77-year-old veteran ex-manager knows a thing or do about the best players in Italy's top league having also been in charge of AC Milan, Juventus and Roma, as well as Real Madrid in Spain. And he believes the former Aberdeen star could land a huge move soon. Capello said: "Lewis Ferguson reminds me a lot of the great Giacomo Bulgarelli for the way he plays across the pitch and for his vision.

"He already has all the potential to be an important and ambitious footballer even at the highest levels. I think of England where there are a lot of resources. And whoever receives this award generally goes to where the Scudetto is won the following season." But Bologna chief executive, Claudio Fenucci, remained adamant his club - who look certain to qualify for the Champions League next season - are in absolutely no rush to catch in on their captain. Aberdeen are due 20 per cent of his future fee, which could be a huge amount too.

However, Fenucci said: "It is nice for Lewis to have been rewarded for the great journey he has made here. But we hope he will remain with us for many more years. That way, he would be similar to Giacomo Bulgarelli in style and also because of the length of service he had with us."
