This farcical Premier League season has plummeted to new depths of absurdity, exposed in a single paragraph deep into the explanation of the four-point deduction handed to Nottingham Forest.
The Premier League would likely point to its member clubs in response. There is no formula to decide the sanction for breaches of profit and sustainability rules because the clubs did not want one, it would submit. That may be so. But three hearings into what can no longer be considered a new process, the lack of consistency towards season-defining considerations is bizarre.
The struggle to fully understand how the rules were applied to Everton is not the only eyebrow-raising element of the treatment of Forest. The club breached its threshold for losses by nearly £35m - in contrast to Everton’s £19.5m overspend. Like with Everton, a significant part of its problems was caused by money spent on players by a club looking to move upwards before building solid foundations for success.
