Brits have been warned that they have just hours to send their energy meter readings to their suppliers, ahead of the October 1 energy price rise. Today has been dubbed "meter reading day" by MoneySavingExpert, Martin Lewis.
He told viewers of his ITV Money Show that they should be submitting a meter reading on or before September 30, to stop firms "estimating" your bill. If you are on a meter - and it is not being automatically read - then firms rely on accurate readings to provide you with an accurate projection of costs.
If you do not submit a meter reading, they will "estimate" your use and this could mean that you end up paying more. Martin said: "Meter reading day is on the 30th of September. The reason for it is on October 1 almost all the energy prices change, most are up."If you pay on direct debit, firms estimate your energy usage and they also estimate when it's used so you don't them to assign more of your usage to the more expensive period.
He added that those on smart meters "don't need to bother", but did urge customers to take a photo of the meter just in case there is ever a price discrepancy. And, he added, that if you do find you are paying for more than you are using - you should not refuse to pay. He said: "Communicate with your energy firm, don’t just not pay, tell them. If they are not giving you the help that you want, speak to Citizens Advice. There is some help out there and you should check what is available."

This is not true and is potentially v. damaging. Please delete. As long as they take the meter reading today, (take a picture on their phone), can submit up to 14 days later. My energy supplier let me correct incorrect readings from 5 months ago cos I had photos as proof.
