I’ve finally reached a place where I’m happy with who I am as a femme gay man Walking hand-in-hand with my date through a freezing Soho one night a couple of years back, I felt calm and content. I’d been seeing him after meeting at a gay bar, and things had been going well. But that night changed everything. He suddenly stopped with a jolt outside a gay bar and made a comment that shocked me to my core.

I’ve spoken at length with them about how similar our growing up was, which ultimately lingered into adulthood — stifling our true selves through fear of judgement, or worse still, being attacked. Connecting with likeminded people who I trust was a huge factor in my self-acceptance Connecting and talking really helped me in shedding some of my shame. My mindset changed.
