In an update this afternoon the DWP changed the advice on the government website about what people need to do

The Department for Work and Pensions has revealed a change for anyone who claims Universal Credit and gets free prescriptions. In an update this afternoon the DWP changed the advice on the gov.co.uk website about what people need to do.

People who receive Universal Credit may be entitled to free prescriptions and other health care costs, such as dental care and sight tests. Until now there had been a income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance box to tick on the back of prescriptions but this has now changed, the DWP said. In an update to the gov.co.uk website the DWP said this advice has now been removed because there is now a Universal Credit checkbox on the back of prescriptions. The DPW said that people are only entitled to free prescriptions if their earnings during your last assessment period were £435 or less, or £935 or less if their Universal Credit includes a payment for a child or limited capability for work.

The last assessment period means the assessment period that ended immediately before the date you claim free prescriptions or health care costs. For those claiming Universal Credit as a couple, the earnings limit applies to the joint income of the person and their partner. Earnings are shown on their statement as ‘Your total take-home pay for this period’.
