Diego Costa's move to Wolves is in the balance but the prospect of a surprise return to the Premier League prompts the question: is he still any good? jacklang brings you up to date on the 33-year-old and his trademark snarl

Costa has not played this calendar year. He spent the last five months of 2021 at Atletico Mineiro in Brazil but rescinded his contract in January. He has appeared in 19 football matches in 20 months. Only 12 of those were starts. These are not encouraging figures.‌Speak to an Atletico Mineiro supporter and the outlook is likely to be a little more positive.

The fans took to him instantly. He promised commitment and a win-at-all-costs approach. Brand values die hard. “If my mum is on the field,” he said at his unveiling, “I’ll take her out, too.” On more than one occasion during his time playing in Brazil, he got into classic Costa tussles with opponents, glares becoming shoves becoming slow-motion headbutts. There is almost a tenderness to it. His forehead just likes making friends with other foreheads. He frequently dropped off the centre-backs to receive the ball, before releasing Atletico’s nippy wingers and full-backs.

None of which is to say that Costa is the same footballer who last played in the Premier League in May 2017.that season with his output in Brazil is probably a bit unfair, given that he turns 34 next month. But there is one eye-catching change here: the drop-off in his defending intensity. The Costa of 2022 is not the chasing machine of old; he tends to preserve his energy a bit more these days.
