I was recently whiling away an evening with one of the great loves of my life – romantic comedies – when I came upon something startling. The film I’d chosen was the 1999 Drew Barrymore classic, a film I primarily remember for leaving me with the mistaken impression that being a journalist involved a lot of high-stakes undercover work . What got my attention, though, wasn’t Barrymore’s flawless performance as Josie “Grossie” Geller; it was the dress she wore to her senior prom.
If you’re shamefully behind on your late-’90s rom-com history, let me refresh you on Josie’s prom ’fit: It’s a metallic pink, ruffle-sleeve concoction that rivals Molly Ringwald’sin the annals of movie prom dress history. Josie’s dress is coded as embarrassingly retro and borderline dorky, but when I laid fresh eyes on it in 2020, all I could think was one word: Batsheva.
“[Josie’s prom dress] is a definite Batsheva dress,” confirms Hay. “The metallic pink… it combines everything insane I’ve done in my dresses. It’s like a Frankenstein dress. I love it. That’s definitely the time period I tap into a lot, and between the crazy fabric and pattern, it’s right up my alley.” Hay also admires the dress’s “Gunne Sax elements”, most notable in its lace cutout overlay.
Perhaps fashion will ultimately always be about taking the medium-uncool trends of the past and bringing them back to exalted new life . If it leads to more major designer Easter eggs prefigured in the beloved rom-coms of yore, I’m 100 per cent on board. What’s next? Bode in
