Charlie Miller isn’t the least bit surprised by the level of flak currently being aimed at Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers.
In Miller’s day, the late, great Walter Smith would have sent them ducking for cover, prescribing a stint on the sidelines to take the pressure off while the heat died down. But Miller’s not sure today’s struggling pair would want to be taken out of the firing line, even if it was an option open to new boss Philippe Clement.
“He ended up getting a bit of stick from the crowd, which was never nice to see. Peter came in to replace Oleg Salenko, who had a similar experience in that he never really won over the fans either. But we’re talking about decent players here. Physically, Oleg was so strong, a beast. He hit five goals in a World Cup match for Russia once.
“Now obviously ours was also one that drank together which I don’t think big Phil will be recommending nowadays! But Walter made sure the older lads like Richard Gough and Coisty would have all the boys tight. He’d suggest we go away for a few days when times were tough just to get them bonding. That’s the clear and present danger for both men. Danilo took over from Dessers on Sunday and Gers’ masked marksman soon robbed Steven Naismith’s team of the points as he sealed an epic win with his 93rd-minute header. As for Lammers, his slot in the main playmaking role will come under increased pressure once Todd Cantwell is able to last a full 90 minutes after his recent knee injury.
Miller, though, was delighted to see skipper James Tavernier back motoring again as he dragged Gers to the win. It looked like the captain would be the next to cop an earful after missing a penalty just before half-time but he took on the responsibility of scoring when Clement’s team won a second in the final minute.
