He doesn’t appear to have ever said his kid works every day. He said he works “every day he can”, ie every day he has a shift. He says that includes weekend shifts, which as a kid would be the most convenient ones. Why wilfully misunderstand?

Good lad, good dad. Don't teach the young to be entitled little assholes. Teach them life lessons and give them some responsibility.
Nothing wrong with this as long as it's not forced labour, it teaches young people to be responsible and learn the value of money. It also gives them some independence and freedom, so they don't have to rely on their parents for all the money they need.
