Lib Dems are hoping to make inroads into the Tories’ ‘Blue Wall’ in the May local elections has suffered a lot of bad days since he arrived in Downing Street, but Thursday 2 May is shaping up to be one of the very worst.This time the Tories, who have lost half their support in opinion polls, are defending just under 1,000 seats and find themselves under pressure in every part of England, from former Home Counties strongholds to recently-won urban areas of the North and the Midlands.
What’s worse for Mr Sunak, his party faces a struggle to hang on to two of the jewels in its local government crown – the mayoralties of the Millions of English voters will elect around 2,636 councillors in 107 local authorities, ten metro mayors including in London, 39 police and crime commissioners and 25 London Assembly members. There are no elections in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Victory in those two mayoral contests would be fresh evidence that Labour is regaining ground in areas which have rejected it over the last decade., which has shifted towards the Tories in recent years, but where Labour is showing signs of recovery. All 72 seats are being contested in the Black Country authority, with Labour needing 11 gains to gain victory in an area represented by two Tory MPs.
