Patient demand is equal 'and now arguably greater' than at the first wave's peak, the service says.

Patient demand in London is "now arguably greater" than in the first wave of the pandemic, according to the service

The rapid spread of the new variant of Covid-19 was said to be the cause of the increased demand, according to the message.'Six-hour waits' Figures seen by the BBC show that at one London hospital on Sunday morning, ambulance crews were typically waiting nearly six hours to hand over patients to hospital staff.

"The demand is occurring because of the rapid spread of the new variant of the Covid-19 virus, initially in north-east London, but now spreading into north central London and predicted to spread further across the rest of the capital in the coming days and weeks", the memo read.As of 24 December, London, the South East, and the East of England had the greatest proportion of new variant casesLondon Ambulance Service said it was working to find ways of alleviating pressures.

Getting worse by the day we really have to stick together in these times that's why I'm going to never argue with anyone ever

Probably because of the scaremongering you lot put there.

Just goes to show nothing the government is doing is working. They don't have a frigging clue..

That’s because the BBC have installed so much fear into their tiny fragile minds. We have a nation of bedwetters. Looking for the government to hold their hands through life. Get a sniffle and they shit themselves and think they need a COVID test🤦‍♂️

Can you please provide factual data to support the claims contained within this article as I cannot find any and consider this a spread of misinformation aimed to create fear in the elderly & vulnerable Ofcom Spread of mis-information

The ONE QUESTION that is NOT answered is 'Why ambulances are kept waiting 6-hours?'. If it is taking that long for a bed to become 'available' then surely the ambulance should NOT remain queued at that hospital but be routed to another location for immediate handling? No excuses.

Not covid related calls though

Maybe the idiots who are still attending parties might stop this easy way to spread the virus.

The amount of morons on this feed is amazing Some seriously mental people. If you think it’s all a conspiracy I’d suggest you visit a GP. You have the dickheads who think they know what they are talking about with zero experience or knowledge 🤦🏻‍♂️ then we have the Karen’s 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ve turned over, this not doing me any good at all. Since when do you need Breakfast telly on both BBC1 & your main news channel? Give viewers entertainment!

Well it can only get worse anybody who caught covid on Christmas day won't need an ambulance till next week.

this is how many lockdowns in a row meanwhile? we were still in lockdown while he called the next lockdown. which rules have now been tightened again. i have nothing left on the radar bag. can someone help me out of the forest of signs?

Because we are now in winter so more are ill 🤒 love to know the full facts behind the call and the numbers fully related to covid

Londonerd should be left to fend for themselves as ignored the advice!

What happened to nhs Nightingale? Why did it get dismantled? nhsnightinghale

Do what they can do, no need to push beyond the limit.

The reason the NHS and every other social service is overwhelmed in the UK is because of the Tories UNVETTED MASS IMMIGRATION POLICY since 2010 they have issued over 7 million National insurance numbers. It's not rocket science.

Hello first wave was last year!

newnormalresist 2019 - I’ve got a stinking cold with a temperature and flu symptoms. Off to bed for a few days. 2020 - shit I’m dying quickly call 999. ScumMedia

Why are you overblowing the disease it’s bad but not that bad

why didn't the government prepare for the second wave earlier since they knew it'll be coming?

We’ve had our 1 day of Christmas - now back to the fearmomgering hey bbc?

Because the media has scared people into thinking covid is the great plague. It's not, and anyone time someone sneezes, they are so shit scared they call an ambulance. Media in this country should be ashamed. The BBC is an embarrassment now.

newnormalresist Why wouldn't they? We're going into winter and the country is in trauma due to being locked down by a tyrannical government. I would expect the call numbers to be high right now

How come such a rise in calls when Tier 4. Why don't we get told what the majority of calls were. Alarming people thinking all serious Covid calls needing A&E when next bulletin says clear all hospital beds to make room for surge in cases. Reporting needs serious intervention👊

So not great at all?

I call bullshit. National A&E respiratory attendances this yr = ~300/day; last yr ~5000/day. 2019 2020

TBH this is nothing new, my longest wait outside A&E was 7 hours, and that was in 2014, the amb trust at the time was telling us to use blue lights to meet targets. Happy to be proved wrong but sadly the only real metric is ICU admissions and [real] Covid mortalities.

Bollocks. Top of the 22:00 news, 'Boxing Day... Covid...overwhelmed' shut up with all the b ull shi t. Scaremongering, associating Christmas and our freedom to a set of numbers that mean nothing.

No surprise

No wonder, the media have made people so scared, I’m surprised we don’t call 999 the instant we cough nowadays.

How many of these calls will be legitimate? A fair chunk will be some bed wetters who have a slight sneeze & cough I can guarantee!

As a Londoner I'm first to say a large portion of us didn't even bother with the simple rules so his only ourselves to blame

Wonder how many are mental health crisis caused by lockdowns? The stuff they won't tell you ..

Not rocket science is it! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

So a) I wonder how many students returned to London and whether the increase is in line with this and B) will we see a larger increase in the 2-3 weeks post Christmas get together. This government haven’t a clue on how to deal with this

But nobody calls a 999 ambulance for covid.

The wave that started in the north has hit the south, but obviously it’s a lot worse than it was up there.

Pretty good in terms of case ratio then

It’s the bbc, turn it off government propaganda channel. More lies lies lies

So many people calling 999 for non life threatening illnesses. Shocking!

And its gonna get worse, because the public can't be sensible

BBC you are so boring it might actually be almost laughable....if I wasn't forced by law to be handing you money every year for the rubbish you spout out!! 🤯🤯😠😠

Why r so many calling 999? Most feel rough but DONT need hospital. This is why hospitals r unable 2 treat/diagnoise other conditions and r also place u MOST likely 2 catch virus. Everyone i know that got virus got it in hospital. Only those in REAL trouble sld dial 999.

Why isn't this the lead story on the news?

COVID Related....🤔🤫 nope more likely... I’m choking on turkey I’ve swallowed the toy out of the crackers My sons got Lego stuck up his bum Wife has got drunk on Sherry and tripped down the stairs Sons feeling dizzy after spending 10 hours on his PlayStation 5 List is endless

Defund the BBC.

People were warned but many didn't take any notice

An investigation into the allergic reactions experienced by UK healthcare workers suggested PEG may have been the culprit. UK health officials have since advised that anyone who has a history of any severe allergic reactions should not get the vaccine:

Are we not told this is the busiest time of year anyway? Presumably ypu would expect more calls than March. Your article does not make it clear whether these are all covid calls!

the list of those that must be involved in the great hoax increases 1. Government 2. Doctors 3. Nurses 4. all other hospital staff 5. Relatives of those in hospital or dead 6. Ambulance service 7. ONS 8. Research scientists 9. all above in all other countries 10. ,,,,

I think more people would listen & watch you if you didn’t spread bullshit news reporting, How about you show facts of calls for COVID and calls for depression or injures etc, also go and ask boris how much money he will make off these dodgy vaccines.

FayeKirklandGP Which hospitals in particular?

They effectively close down the NHS for 9 months to focus on COVID. But in those same 9 months, they don’t plan for higher seasonal demand in the winter?

Total media rubbish again

Good to see the BBC have finally caught up with what is happening in London

Whoopee doo

Why is there no update on Oxford vaccine approval? That would check some of the negativities and create optimism.

Instead of comparing everything to Covid to see if this was high number of calls compare it to the same date as last year that will give u a better picture.

No more busy than any other winter. This isn't news.

Can we ask what happened to the nightingale unit at excel?

Let's see a breakdown of what the calls to A&E were for & a breakdown of calls on 26th December 2019 as a comparison. How many calls were about Covid cases and how many calls were as a result of other issues caused by the consequences of lockdown & political decisions.

Q: why do people leave it so late that they need an ambulance to go to hospital with breathing difficulties?

Dear BBCBreaking please show evidence to back your claims or you just telling lies and scaremongering again

I never understand the request to only use 999 in emergency life threatening situations. Why would you use it for anything else?

I noticed it just by driving for 10mns to my local supermarket today (27/12/20). I had to stop three times to let ambulances overtake me. 😭😭😭😪😪😪😭😭

People need to take into account that at the moment people aren't getting to see their GP or medical treatment when they need it and that this will also increase the numbers who end up in A&E or needing an ambulance and emergency treatment.

No they aint

We were ok then

Bs

They need an helping hand, call in the army they have fantastic medics and their own transport, so that should take the strain of a bit, well i hope so

How many calls did they receive on 24th or 25th December? How did these compare to last year's calls on same 3 days over Christmas period? Looks to me like another case of spin the statistics to fit the desired narrative.

The average for this time of year is around 6000

How to legally circumvent the tyrannical lockdown restrictions imposed by Boris: Register a limited company through Companies House on the GOV UK website. 'Hire' friends/family on a 0 hour contract, invite them to an 'unpaid work event' in your home (registered premises). Simple!

It’s Christmas. Give your endless propaganda a rest eh? Is there a period from modern history reminiscent of this relentless brainwashing? 🧐💀

And so it begins...

Yep. Its called winter. It happens every year.

How many was those caused coz of lock down . Cancer patients not getting the help they need . People committing suicide, stressed out not seeing family or people self harming

More scaremongering from your journalism is disgusting how do you sleep at night.

Sad reflection of all those uncaring narcissists who ignored every plea by the government to abide by simple rules that would have reduced infection.

Stop calling u all dont need over 80s wont need soon immune from virus early jan

Everyone has a cold and think they are dying. You breed fear this is what you get.

As first wave what?

but it is winter and also general flu season so an increase is always expected this time of year. Covid or not!

Across country picture doesn't look dramatically worrying, compared to this time last yr

This including the tits who phone 999 when the Sky chucks it?

A good proportion of these calls will need the assistance of an ambulance crew. Unfortunately a good proportion don’t and should make their own way toa&e but see this as a free service, as they potentially don’t have a car as living in London and calling 999 is the east option

I see knife crimes are on the rise 🤔

Shame the greed driven scum tories halved the bed numbers to screw the NHS

i t ' s w i n t e r l a d s

Probably down to the endless amount of stabbings and acid attacks in Khan’s London

Prove it.. or don't believe you
