Opposition leader says: 'People who pay their council tax for council services have a right to know if a councillor hasn’t paid.'

Liverpool Council's opposition leader believes the situation involving two city councillors summonsed to court over council tax matters is an "issue of transparency."

Cllr Cardwell said that prior to being a councillor he incurred significant debt, part of which was council tax. He is paying all his debt back to the council through a repayment plan. Cllr Gaughan said she accrued significant debt after her marriage broke down. She said: "One of these debts was council tax, I am repaying the debt to the council as I am adamant that I will repay all the money I owe." She is now being supported by a debt charity.

He added: "People who pay their council tax for council services have a right to know if a councillor hasn’t paid. The fact that the council kept this from the public has made it a much bigger issue around transparency.
