Like any Manchester resident, I’ve spotted Coronation Street stars out and about over the years and I’m often in awe of the surrealness of it. My first sighting was David Platt enjoying a Rudy’s pizza in Ancoats, then there was the time I saw Gary Windass sneaking into 42s.
Yet Sue managed to shed the role of Eileen - although retained some of her grumpiness - as she swapped the cobbles for the convent in her first time on stage in over 30 years. During Monday’s performance she was greeted with a warm applause as the ‘home crowd’ at the Palace Theatre welcomed her to the stage.
But when Deloris helps transform the convent’s woeful choir, despite her own struggling singing career, the two of them find that they may be able to help each other out after all. As the scenes switch between life within the convent walls and the outside world the set movements are flawless and cleverly done. An altar turned into a bar, complete with crucifix beer tap, was a nice touch.
