Coronation Street's Bill Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, has been given three months to clear his debt with HMRC. The 91 year old actor is reportedly waiting for the sale of his home to pay off the remaining balance.
He was one of 288 people who put money into a plan, with each person putting in about £1.75million on average. It has been reported that Bill joined this plan in March 2012. But a court agreed with HMRC, which said the plan was just to avoid paying taxes. The Treasury called it "abusive and artificial".
After news emerged about Bill, a spokesperson for Coronation Street said in a statement: "We're really sorry to hear of Bill's financial situation. He has an ongoing contract with Coronation Street and remains a much-loved member of the cast."
