Several countries have announced drastic new measures in an attempt to stop COVID-19 spreading further.Infections are surging once again in the region of northern Italy where the pandemic first took hold in Europe.
The government wants to avoid another lockdown but has refused to rule out closing cities or provinces. In places where the infection rate is more than 35 per 100,000 people, masks will be mandatory in crowded public places. They have been mandatory on public transport and in shops since April. Bars and restaurants will also close early.
