PM Boris Johnson says office workers who can work from home 'should do so' and adds that all pubs, bars and restaurants in England should operate 'table service only' and must close at 10pm from Thursday. Updates on latest COVID restrictions in England:

by mid-October if surge continuesNicola Sturgeon also making addresses later todayThe number of people testing positive across the UK is on the up once more, after a slow-down during summer.

The drastic action could take an"immense toll on people's physical and mental health and on the economy", the Labour leader warned. On the move to enforce a 10pm closing time for hospitality venues, he says it is"utterly stupid" given"hardly any infections are being passed on in pubs". In England and Wales only 99 had COVID-19 mentioned on death certificate - the 2nd lowest number of COVID-19 deaths since the third week of March. For comparison 12.5% of deaths mentioned flu and pneumonia

Nevertheless, half of all deaths where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were in hospital Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said:“The decision is mainly a result of a downturn in trade in these pubs, linked with the large reduction in passenger numbers using the airports.“The company will listen to suggestions from staff to help avoid or reduce the number of compulsory redundancies which are required.

Speaking to Sky News Andy Burnham, who was himself once the health secretary, has said that his region has highlighted things to central government that it has later had to address such as financial support for those on low incomes to self-isolate. When asked whether schemes such as Eat Out to Help Out are to blame, he said it was"bordering on experimental" and not"particularly helpful" in encouraging control of the virus.

It reported that sales during the first half of its financial year to 27 August fell by almost 80% as a result of the lockdown that forced the closure of most of its sites.'We've got to protect people from this virus,' Labour says

why is not putting the 2m distance rule back in place? If the r number is up and virus is spreading fast surely that should be one of the new restrictions going back to 2m distance

Eat out to help out backfired big time.. Don't make that mistake again when you ease it

Boris is not mentally fit to continue running the country any more. He is Absolutelly blind

Our department CAN work from home, but our manager wants us in.If an employer decides to overrule our own views, wishes and feelings about our own lives, safety and national effort to reduce the R rate,Will we be compensated if we contract Covid or our family members as a result?

He has not done enough. These actions will not curb the virus.

Can I just ask all anti mask, flat earthers to start playing by the rules or this will just go on for ages

And this military business .

Just saying!

It's hardly encouraging that we have Dido Harding in charge who has a track record of incompetence to match Grayling.

Clown 🤡

christmas canceled

Good to know that the virus isn't a danger until after 10pm in pubs, bars and restaurants!

He speaks like a true leader.

Can someone ask if wakes (after a funeral) can still have 30 people attending?
