Co-op says it was hit by more than 300,000 cases of shoplifting and abuse last year

The group had also invested in body cameras for staff and CCTV alongside trialling new security measures including secure kiosks, locked doors on high-value products, dummy packaging, and automated CCTV. 'The Retail Crime Action Plan that was announced last year by the Government with an intention to ensure police attendance at all incidents was welcomed by us,' Mr Hood added.

The number of offences jumped by nearly a third compared with the previous year, to more than 400,000 in total. Staff were threatened by the machete wielding criminals and there was also a store worker behind the kiosk when the raid began, with the supermarket warning there was a 'tsunami of shop crime' taking place in Britain.
