The police officer had parked his Cherokee Jeep in the car park of Shandon Park Golf Club in east Belfast

A Co Fermanagh man was today acquitted of constructing a bomb planted under the car of a police officer.

The police officer had left his home that morning and parked his Cherokee Jeep in the Club's car park. After playing a round of golf, he returned to his vehicle and noticed an object on its underside. As well as Mr Granaghan's DNA being present on wire on the inside of the bomb, the Crown also presented circumstantial evidence which it said showed his support for violent dissident republican ideology.

During the non-jury trial, his barrister John Larkin KC pointed out there were no traces of explosives found either in Mr Granaghan's home or shed, or on clothes, tools and other items removed and forensically examined following his arrest. During today's ruling, Mr Justice Fowler said: "Leaving aside the DNA, the defence say there is no evidence that the defendant had any involvement in making this explosive device.

Policing: PSNI officer calls for more ethnic minority representationPSNI officer and NBPAUK president Andy George calls for greater representation of ethnic minorities in policing in Northern Ireland NBPAUK Given ChiefConPSNI has halted recruitment due to financial constraints it's highly unlikely any ethnicity will be represented, nevermind ethnic minorities. NBPAUK Genuine question, what percentage of those applying are from an ethnic minority background? If it's equal to those who are successful then is that not how the system was intended to work? If the applications are low then work needs to be done in encouraging people to apply. NBPAUK Surely it is not a problem for minorities to join the police?
