King Charles has waited 70 years to become the sovereign - this is his journey to the throne 👇

His relationship with Queen Elizabeth was marginally better, but still distant. As Bedell Smith wrote in Vanity Fair in 2017: ‘That lack of tactile connection was achingly apparent in May 1954, when the Queen and Prince Philip greeted five-year-old Charles and three-year-old Anne with handshakes after an absence of nearly six months on a tour of Commonwealth nations.

Pictured here in 1960 alongside his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, royal biographers have observed that since the moment the future King was born, he became ‘public property’ . After studying at Trinity College, Cambridge Charles served in the Royal Air Force and the Navy, like his ancestors before him.

In this picture of the young King from 1971, Charles, who in so many ways was so different to his father, chose to follow in Philip’s footsteps to undertake military service after formal education concluded Charles, who said he wanted to do the right thing ‘for my country and my family’, proposed to Diana in Windsor Castle in 1981. It was when they announced their engagement that the new sovereign made a comment that must still echo in his ears today: when a journalist asked whether they were in love, Diana replied, ‘Of course,’ and Charles added, ‘Whatever “in love” means.’

Their failed marriage is well documented, and while Diana welcomed Charles’ two sons – Prince William in 1982, and Prince Harry in 1984, her husband started an ongoing affair with Camilla, who was then also married at the time to Andrew Parker-Bowles. The affair was exposed in 1993, when a newspaper published a full transcript of Camilla and Charles’s entendre-filled telephone conversations.

Prince Charles, here pictured in the 1990s at a conference in Los Angeles, has known to be an impassioned speaker over causes he cares about

He didn’t wait 70. He couldn’t have been king at the age of 1. Or at least effectively. He waited like 20-30 years.

King Charles reveals his royal cypher which will appear on coins and stampsKing Charles’s royal cypher has been worn in public for the first time since Queen Elizabeth II’s death. The cypher displaying the initials CR, will slowly start appearing on everyday objects around us. It's actually a tie pin with the cypher of his grandfather, George VI... Where do you get your stories from It looks like George VI’s cypher, not his own. Maybe an indication he did actually want to be George as many thought If the 'R' is Latin wouldn't the name 'Charles' also be Latinized? If it should then his symbol would be either a 'C' or even a 'K'; both would be appropriate ; for the Latin is Carolus or Karolus. So we might see CIIIR or KIIIR.
