Brexit deal split deeply risky move for Theresa May as MPs smell a trap

Extraordinary times calls for extraordinary metaphors. None more so than Labour MP Mary Creagh's assertion that"you cannot separate the goat's head".split it into two partsMPs will on Friday be asked to vote only on the main part of the deal - the withdrawal agreement.

It also gets around the ruling by Commons Speaker John Bercow that MPs cannot be presented with another vote on the Theresa May's Brexit deal that is identical to the last. UK law dictates that the second part of the deal, the political declaration - which covers the future relationship - would still need to be passed before we leave the EU.

No doubt, the government will seek to reassure MPs by promising to bring back another full vote on the whole Brexit deal in the coming weeks, giving them a chance to take blocking action.It is UK law that dictates that both parts of Mrs May's deal need to passed before Brexit.

The withdrawal agreement is the problem. It would be a binding international treaty incapable of being amended. To suggest it could be is deceitful and reprehensible. The political declaration is merely a declaration and would not be legally binding. This is beyond farce.

The only trap is that we, the public, will finally know which MPs are up for a deal, which are up for nodeal and which were never up for Brexit at all and want to RevokeArticle50. Personally I think this was a genius call...

The WA passes, under EU law the UK is committed to Brexit on 22 May. Not then passing the PD just creates a confusion in UK law, just as not passing the SI to change the exit date from 29 Mar to 12 Apr would have.
