By reneging on a treaty, the prime minister shows he cares more about a Eurosceptic fantasy than the Good Friday agreement, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

There are cases in history of national leaders being coerced into treaties. Yet only Boris Johnson claims to have signed an international agreement by mistake. In the prime minister’s telling, the UK was bamboozled into a substandard Brexit deal last year. Events were moving “at pace”; the politics were “challenging”; European rules were smuggled into the small print. So parliament must pass a law disagreeing with the agreement. To fix the deal, the deal must be broken.

Johnson in one dastardly move can ruin Britain’s reputation as an honourable State and at the same time undermine the GFA & destroy the hard won peace in N Ireland. More Bullingdon Boy than grownup PM he will be remembered but not celebrated when his tenure ends

It is a good thing Ireland are paying for Brexit. A wall in the Irish Sea doesn't come cheap.

I can't see any winners out of this horrendous mess Johnson has created.

So nice to see people talking out their fking arses. EU border restrictions demand a checkpoint as close to the point of entry to the market as physically possible. One option the Irish Sea. Another being La Manche. Another being somewhere like The Scilly Isles: Checkpoint Eire

Ireland will pay the price because its leaders have whored the country out to international finance capital. The Irish fought for centuries to be free, and sold their independence away within one generation. Tragic.

Don't worry the EU will look after them. Tee hee.

Ireland for the Irish, Britain for the British

Opinion: Boris Johnson’s Brexit mess is a threat to peace in Northern IrelandThe government’s handling of the negotiations, has shaken relations between the EU and the UK to the very core Maybe it's the terrorists that are a threat to peace - not some civil servants in hi viz check VAT receipts. More whingey nonsense from the (not) independent. Utter drivel! The EU has been using NI as a nasty bargaining tool to control British trade policy as seen in the famous Barnier video. That peace in NI is being linked to the trade of goods with the EU & the rest of the U.K. is cynicism of the worst kind!
