Knife crime: Asda to remove single kitchen knives from sale

Supermarket chain Asda has pledged to remove all single kitchen knives from sale amid concerns about their use in violent crime.Single kitchen knives are the most frequently stolen knives, Asda said, prompting the decision to stop their sale by the end of April.

Nick Jones, Asda senior vice-president, said the company had"a responsibility to support the communities we serve". "Whilst we have already taken steps to restrict the sale of knives to ensure that they do not fall into the wrong hands, we felt there was more we could be doing to support those looking at how to bring this issue under control", he said.It is illegal to sell knives to under 18s, unless they have a folding blade less than 3in long. In Scotland, 16 to 18-year-olds may buy cutlery and kitchen knives, however.

Should companies REALLY be having to remove knives from it shelves..because of nasty no marks who want to injure and kill? It has to be sorted a different way..

the absolute state of the UK.

Just shows how out of touch these MPs are too.. this wasn’t a good move. It’s a marketing gimmick.

They’ll just buy them in bulk ...

Clearly from these comments this isn’t a big enough step so..ban all knives everywhere. You’re only allowed plastic ones or the blunt ones you get in primary school that struggle with over cooked broccoli

Feels like one of the target markets least likely to need a single knife would be gangs.

Why.....Why do the rest of us always have to adjust for the scumbags.

Except BOGOF?

The only ones making a killing here are Asda.

Balmy idea will solve nothing

Some free media coverage for asda perhaps if they campaigned for all retailers to do the same maybe genuine gesture

so now gangs will have to split a pack

Behind the cigarette counter with a big camera and full customer details taken might be better.... but least it’s an attempt to help

I’d rather have Asda run the Home Office than the incompetent Tories.

Knives don’t kill people, people kill people 👀 that’s just a good look to the eye , in reality they didn’t stop anything they now make more money off knives by you now having to buy a set instead of one. And the public applauds them for what seem to be a good job 👏..Asda wins

May not be 'PC' but in my opinion (only) bring back death penalty should be life for life and it would help stop as much knife crime

They are only going to sell gang sized multi packs in future

Ah yes now they have options when they buy a knife, how thoughtful of Asda. All jokes aside I’m curious how they think this will reduce knife crime.

Any little thing that can be done to reduce knife crime is welcomed. asda

Given these incidents, as bad as they are, are from a limited number of parts in the country, with a few parts of London mostly to blame, why apply this everywhere and disadvantage the majority of the country rather than targetting certain branches?

Not before time ehh

Thank you for this move. Hopefully all other stores will now follow this

if they must but surely checking everyone age would be better

So sad they want to promote themselves off the back of such a chilling subject they must know that proposal is meaningless - SHAME ON THEM

Thank you Asda for trying to do your bit

Now they’ll rob multipacks instead and arm the whole mandem.

They just pop to Tesco instead

I’m sure this will make life harder for folk on limited resources to prepare healthy meals BootstrapCook. I’m not sure it will have as much impact on knife crime JohnCarnochan

Now they can buy a multi-pack and give one to each of their mates.

What utter rubbish.

Now murderers will have to choose steak, bread or filleting knife 🤔

Great idea. Now let's remove other items from general sale because of fuckwits. All vehicles, hammers, screwdrivers, sugar, fertiliser, forks, picture frames with pointy edges, tins of spaghetti hoops (because, once opened, the top is a bit sharp)...

At least they are doing something... Unlike the government

Why not make kitchen knives without the pointy bit at the front end? Great for steak, lousy for stabbing teenagers!

🤨 This will only affect the decent human beings who (believe it or not) are able to use blades responsibly, literally because of small amount of youths no one can seem to control. Treat the cause not the symptom... surely?

Not entirely sure what that will achieve...

Nice one Asda ,,hope some more big stores will all follow suit

This is a pointless move. We already have ID checks in place at supermarkets so that children can't buy knives.

That’s knife crime sorted

Manuel_Eichhorn

but your mother com/ sells guns?

Absolutely pointless.. they will just steal multi-packs and give the spares to their mates, or buy online!

What a waste of publicity-seeking time. Many of the young people carrying knives are too young to walk into a shop and buy one Also, most of the knives carried by young people are either flick / lock knives not available in Asda, or knives taken from the home kitchens.

Pathetic. Crack down on the users, go back to stop and search, have tougher sentences, give teachers more discipline power from a young age. I'm not buying 'nothing for kids to do' it's bollocks!

Gimmick .. plenty of knives in the kitchen

I doubt anyone carrying a knife goes out and buys one. Apart from those bloody great hunting knives and serrated back army knives which they, no doubt, buy online. Those are the ones that need banning.

That will not change anything .It's the parents that need to make sure that their idiot children know right from wrong.

Wellp, guess we'll just have to buy a multipack

Are the ASDA management stupid, how will this reduce knife crime FFS!

The equivalent of a glass of water on a house fire.

They are able to get knives from the kitchen or other people.

GovMurphy NewJerseyOAG so tell me this, what’s next razor blades? Let’s learn from other countries mistakes. I guess knives kill people? Or people use the knives to kill 🤔 same for guns 🤔. You are smart men... we the NJ PEOPLE DEMAND IT !!!

There is always eBay and Amazon but I guess this is a start

Didn't the 17 year reporter from Channel4News only buy multipacks though? 🤔

Well that’s pointless.

drantbradley

That'll stop it 🙄

They will just buy however many are offered or take them from home. Ridiculous.

Knee jerk lunacy. Tackle the cause.

On the basis that your average street scumbag won’t want to lay out on a canteen🤔

It's admirable idea, but people still need to buy knives for cutting up food, right? I know it's easy to say, but its the mentality that leads people to stab someone that really needs tackling.

Is this the best we can do, it's pathetic really

Brilliant, well done Asda

This is a great idea.... thankyouasda for stopping the gangs from buying knives. Now it will only be people why by multipacks for sensible reasons that will buy knives

They've also made the 10p shopping bags a security risk at our asda Westbrook store...hidden them away & you have to put in a special request to get one.

Great now the kids have to buy a single knife on the black market

“Stabbings are done with knives found in the home” Do you think they just randomly appeared the drawer or something?

How about immediately? One of the knifes you'll try to shift before hand may be the blade that kills a kid! If youre going to do something: just do it. Dont try and get free press out of it in the meanwhile!

Great .Just but a mutipack and share with your mates instead.More severe punishment for carrying knives is the way foward. The longer the blade the nore severe. The likes of being found with a sword should have minium prision sentance imposed.

Asda now hoping for rush sales before the April 'ban' comes in to force? 🤣

Well that's a start I suppose.

Are kids even buying knives? Don’t they just rob them out of their kitchen draw?

Man's gonna buy a six pack. Deal O the day

🔪 Knives are not a problem! Why no one speaks the truth in England? You have a racial problem - children from migrant families! Your Future - Civil War !!! 😢 Asdaknife ASDA GreatBritain London SadiqKhan shame

The idea that you can stop anyone having a knife is so ignorant and absurd. People die of stabbings in maximum security prisons. You know why? Because it’s a pointed object. That’s it. If someone wants one and they can’t buy one then they will make one.

If you think not selling single kitchen knives is going to help you're deluded. If they want a weapon they'll get a weapon, they're criminals not law abiding citizens. I've said it before it seems it's everyone else's fault never the criminals or gang culture.

Great. A knife ban. Can you believe it? Next, single hammers, fireplace pokers, and baseball bats.

Mmm maybe it’s a start I mean as a cook handy when I need a new pairing knife in a rush. Still it needs to be across the board not just one shop

Can they ban chop sticks and paper cuts

All those stabbers gonna have to start hitting Sainsbury’s now.

A lot of cynical comments on here from people who clearly haven’t read or understood the story. ADSA clearly have figures to support the fact that single knives are stolen. That’s unlikely to be done by someone prepping veg!

Here we go again the decent people will have pay for the crime committed by Scumbags.

Nonsense so now law abiding folks are penalised along with scum .

😂😂😂😂😂and now they will buy in dozen or may be Amazon is much cheaper the problem isn’t how and where to buy the problem is lack of fear and punishment they know our justice system is useless so they loving it

Fecking ridiculous, people will just buy them elsewhere, I for one will not buy a pack of 2/4/6 If i only need one.. this move will not stop arseholes who want to harm.....

So now you have to buy a set to arm the whole gang!

When Holy God's commandments are mocked and ridiculed, day in and day out, what else can happen to UK? What you sow, you reap too. Of course, there is a time gap.

Silly thought but I'll tell you anyway... Do all knives need to be pointy? Can't remember last time I had to stab something with a knife in the kitchen

Beyond belief 😩

Pointless. Most of those kids are too young to buy a knife legally in the shops anyway. If you want to have a proper knife to look 'cool' in front of your bum chums you don't get from Asda but internet. Either way I bet most people have knives at home

Must be doing a better deal on sets

What next, no bame allowed in stores

Great....now they’ll buy the whole knife block 🙄

Yeah, that'll solve it......

Removing the knife is not the case any one that comity a crime with a knife should serve maximum 5 to 10 years and if that person is dead you should serve life in prison

Good move ASDA.

Do you’ll have guns to?

Heard lidl was gonna withdraw mini Uzi too

You get rid of guns, murderers start using knives; get rid of knives, then they go to pointed sticks; get rid of pointy sticks, they start bludgeoning people with rocks. Congratulations, you're now back to the stone age.

Most ridiculous thing I’ve heard and I’ve purchased 100 rounds of 45ACP from Walmart’s.

All should follow suit and tgeu should be sold as alcohol or cigarettes over 18 only.

The difference between the UK and the USA. In the UK they try to prevent violence by redusing the sale of dangerous weapons, in the US they simply encourage more violence by increasing it.

That’ll stop it?

maybe just age checks before selling....this is just silly.. what next ban sharp knife in homes and sell everything pre cut into bite size

Those kind of people are not going to go in asda and BUY any multiple of knives are they.

Time parents started parenting, and took an interest in there kids.

Disgraceful. How many people are killed on the roads each year but they don't ban cars. They crack down on the bad drivers.

Ebay.

How about selling knives that are not pointed? Like diving knives

Great u can buy them in bulk instead

It it much better if they buy a whole set

Close the knife show loophole!

They will only got to Poundland for a pack a knifes for £1

They will just buy multipacks instead. Some don’t care about the costs as long as they carry a weapon around illegally

PR Stunt

At least they are trying to do something!! 😕

So they'll just buy a set so they can have extra

Amazing that a supermarket is doing more to tackle knife crime than our cowardly government.

Makes sense 👍

Well done ASDA..

What on earth for

Not going to achieve anytbing. Is there any evidence that the knives used in street stabbings are bought for that purpose? This move by Asda can't do any harm but struggling to see it actually doing much good. I'd guess 95%+ of knives in attacks are old/used household knives.

Just buy a set and get really tooled up 🙄

Uh... if they were so worried they would issue a recall from store and remove them immediately. But hey ho, guess they don't want to lose money on what's already in stock... 🙄

Why cant the knives be put in a secure place like cigarettes so they can monitor who buys them and cannot sell to under 25's or make them show ID and fill out a name and address form like they do when you buy a TV (or used to do)

Root cause people... Root cause... Look at the community. Knives don't kill people, rabbits do!! And other people, obviously...

How many kids go to asda to buy knives?

A pack of 4 or 6 steak knives doesn't cost a lot if you get the cheaper end of the market. They're also very sharp with a jagged edge solely for cutting meat. Going to ban them too

A good start. Well done. But definitely more needs to be done too. Change designs to they don’t have sharp point. Put serial numbers on them & take buyers details to link them.

England. Where people are so pissed off, you can't sell individual knives because the kids will kill each other with them. Fanfuckingtastic.

Why by end of April? Why not now, don't want to lose the sales of their stock ?

So treat the effects not the cause? They should be sued by Big Pharma for plagiarism. causeandeffect amateurarmy commonpurpose

asda i can go to my local stores in bedminster and whitchurch and take them off the shelves for you. I reckon people round the country would do this if you put something on your feed asking for help and you will have it done by 2200 tonight.

What about hammers? Hammers seem like the next logical weapon people will use. Will you ban those too when people start using them to attack each other?

More police and harsher sentences for people caught with knives or involved in knife crime.

They want loonies to buy in bulk.

Will probably grab one from home

How will this help? Stupid!

That's great but ain't going to stop them fickers

Sure good sentiment but last time checked they don’t stock hunting or Zombie knows which seem to be the choice of thugs.... theresa_may should be calling a Cobra meeting, she would if similar number killed in Terrorism. Get a grip and pull all Governement together!

So they’ll just get the full pack

What the living f*** is going on in the UK 🇬🇧?!!!

It's better than doing nothing.

But I only want one not 3.seems stupid idea.

Utter nonsense!

So if you to stab someone you have to buy the hole set 😳😳😳

That’ll do it

Daft idea. Why buy a few when you only need one.

Asda really jumped on this as a way to make money for themselves. Now you're have to buy a set of knifes just to replace your one. Walmart making money out of people suffering, nothing new there.

Yh that should help

All their mates will have to chip in and they now all have knifes !

Idiot logic.

Why... have Supermarkets been the source of the weapons used ?

Yeah, because these knife gangs always use Asda kitchen knives..

Oh come on...this is ridiculous. We need to start thinking about WHY these kids are now carrying knives and tackle the root cause. If they want a knife there are so many ways they can get one that not selling individual knives will make no difference.

Govt have no idea...... These people are running the country..... It's mad... They're so out of touch of normal people

Oh wow, what a game changer

Well that'll solve everything

I don't think the quantity of knives an individual can buy or the fact we can buy knives is the issue. People will still take knives from their kitchen draw. 'I was gonna stab you but I ain't paying 17.99 for a pack of four.'

Negative Britain! At least they’re trying to find a solution to the problem. Well done! Is everyone who comments on Twitter bitter, twisted and tired of life?

Wait...so when people buy knives with the intent to do crime, they now go home with MORE THAN ONE knife? Genius! 😂

I absolutely don't understand why? Genuine question.

What about only stocking knives that aren't pointed I've noticed chefs on tv using them so they're out there. Could this be the direction to go in.

They'll pinch one from a burglary anyway.

So they want youths to carry more than one knife?

So instead of buying a single knife to stab people they'll be forced to stock up. Lawgik! It's not the knives that's the problem ffs...

- Imagine being this dumb 🤣 no one even asked for their opinion

Change mindsets & take on the subcultures which have been allowed to breed in this country without fear of being “un PC”. Do not change what you sell!

Couldn’t have come spoon enough

That'll fix it 🙄

That's Asda slice!

Arming them with 4 knives is so much better. 🙄 Or maybe enforce the over 18 policy?

hahahahahahhahaahahaha

Social justice warrior, fight, finish HIM!

Great initiative, weird that they announce on a Saturday.

It’s a start hopefully all supermarkets will do the same access to knifes is far too easy.

LOL: Go Britannia

PROBLEM: SOLVED ✅

Futile.

Think 25 not working then?

Make the majority pay for mischief caused by a few. Same old, same old. Won't do any good anyway.

Nice gesture but it's not the knife it's the PERSON that stabs peoples

Sounds more like profiteering out of death asda

The same situation. You will not see the knives on the selves in the stores.

Next: recording ID numbers when purchasing knives.

well, its a start i suppose

when your government is so shit even asda has to step in

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahbaabababababahahahahahahahahha

Why don't they just introduce a 'must be over 18' policy?

Will it remove matches and lighters to deter arsonists?

Knee jerk cobblers or attention seeking virtue waving. It wont stop someone getting a knife.

Nice sentiment....but they will buy multiples anyway - throw away after one use.

They’ll just buy a pack of 4 and use them as throwing knifes, hardly sorts the problem.
