Archie Battersbee's family seek permission to move 12-year-old to hospice

Archie Battersbee suffered brain damage in an incident at home on 7 April and has not regained consciousness

It had been due to be withdrawn on Wednesday but was delayed for the ECHR to consider his family's appeal. "It believes that Archie's condition is unstable and that transferring him even a short distance involves significant risk."Hollie Dance said the European Court of Human Rights' ruling was "another heart-breaking development"

There has been lots of discussion about this, here is one to add to the mix.... why haven't they considered organ donation. Or was the 'incident' at home that landed him like this precludes organ donation. I bet if he needed a liver they would be up in arms for one.

The hospital should do the right thing and let Archie pass. The parents must face the facts that their son will not recover. He has received nothing but the highest care since April and the medical evidence has been agreed by all the courts in the land.

Is it just me or is this turning into the Mum show?

I'm not sure if when they remove the vent that he wouldn't immediately die since his injury was to the brain stem... not even getting to the 'use regular oxygen. Palliative care'.

The most selfish dispute anyone can have. Living is more than existing. What life would this be where you'd see life pass through a window? I wouldn't be aware of anything around. This is not love.

And he's gonna die anyway on his way there. His Mum is getting on my nerves now

🙏😢💔

This should have been done WEEKS AGO! Instead his mum thought it would be a good idea to drag Archie through every court.... I feel for them, I really do but claiming he didn't get any care is sickening! He was brain dead in April, it's not been a miracle or god keeping him here

The BBC really needs to get better at reporting on situations like this. Someone who is brain stem dead is dead, just because they are hooked up to machines that simulate cardiovascular functions doesn't mean those machines are 'keeping him alive'.

It will be the year 2056 and they will still be banging on about it! People die every day, it is sad but that is just how it is. They are fighting because they have guilt.

Stop giving this mum a platform. This isn’t what’s best for anyone, especially not Archie, not her, and not for the NHS staff you’re giving her a platform to slate. Hospice in no heroics, just comfort measures…how’s he getting there unvented? Just, all of you vile news outlets🛑

Nothing anyone of us says can truly help this family. I hope at least they get this. They deserve to at least have this moment

Would a hospice accept him?

Young boy tries to commit suicide and no one is looking into the reasons. What had he been going through ?

My heart goes out to the family and I hope they find peace. We would all do the same in this situation. Ive seen comments on here about the use of NHS resources please give your head a wobble.

Probable he will die attempting to transfer him. How his family can be so ridiculous is incomprehensible to me

a convo should be started on the humane treatment of the family Archie is leaving behind. Moving 2hospice could b the least the NHS Trust could have allowed. Afterall what other significant risk would there be 4 someone they are withdrawing medical treatment 2allow 2die?

On the face of it this looks like a delaying tactic and/or an attempt to secure some sort of legal 'victory', however small.

I had sympathy for the parents until now. They are acting in a selfish manner towards the amazing NHS who have dealt with this distressing case. The costs cannot continue. They are needed elsewhere urgently. The parents should spend precious time with Archie not with lawyers.

His mother has turned this very sad situation into the Hollie Dance Show, having more time with the media than with Archie. Why is she doing it? Publicity, she’s got that, Money, she has a fund raising site, or she can’t accept the reasons why he would want to take his own life.

What I don't understand is the parents wouldn't let him be moved for a scan which is in the same hospital but they now want to move him to a hospice.

Private or NHS.....

If they are prepared to put their hands in their pockets to pay for this move then let them move their already dead sons corpse. I wonder who has paid for all the failed Court applications cause they certainly have not?

Bargaining with death. Acceptance is near. RIP little man.

I doubt he can be moved.

Morbid.

Absolutely heart-breaking situation but this media circus is absurd and unnecessary.

He will come back to life here on earth in a paradise condition and with a perfect young body with the prospect of living forever as a young person!

This is just absolutely heart-breaking for all involved. Archie's parents know he is dying, yet rather than a swift and dignified end the poor boy is being subjected to a drawn out death at the centre of a media circus, exploited by religious groups. The whole thing is awful.

I would be cautious over that, in moving him they could move to get him over to to Italy or Japan as that have said they can help. Moving him could kill him, leave him in the hospital and let him rest in peace .....

Heart-breaking. It's no quality of life for the lad. Sometimes you just have to recognise that letting them go is what's best for them. If the mother wants his life to mean something, use his memory as a way of tackling the sort of stupid TikTok 'challenges' that led to this.

State of some of the comments on this, the Mum is tortured with grief....

So so sad for them all but perhaps it would be best to spend what time he has left just being with him not trying to transport him somewhere else 😢

Those parents have lost my sympathy now, this is just selfishness, it’s child cruelty. Let the child die in peace!!

Why can't this family heed the advice of the experts? Is it all about publicity?

Parents using every tactic possible to postpone the inevitable. Sad thought this case is, they are potentially denying assistance to another person who has a chance of recovery. Let the boy go with the dignity that he & those that have been his carers deserve. ArchieBattersbee

The situation is sad and my heart goes out to the family, but the mother is being incredibly selfish and is denying science. He is brain stem dead and his brain has started to deteriorate. Her love for her son has blinded her of basic neuroscience. The best thing is to let him go

They should let the poor kid be moved to a hospice. But only if the parents have their passports (and Archie’s) taken away until the child dies.

The mother should of let him go a long time ago , Waisting precious nhs time and money

Archie Battersbee: Who decides when life support ends?Tragically, for a small number of children who become critically ill each year, medicine reaches its limits. Who decides when life support ends? (Not stating my opinion, I am the neutral Poll Master) For me its the hope that kills you. The parents hope he will improve despite no medical evidence of this ever going to happen. They need time to mourn him properly but they can't do that until they let him go. All the courts said turn machine off, time to let him rest in peace. So sad for the family.
